Calling alcoholism a disease is just an excuse to remove it from the same classification as other drugs.

when he get's out he'll need your support to stay away from alcohol, jail will allow him the chance to get sober but it's up to him to put in the effort to stay sober. dont blame the system for his time, it his own actions that put him there, and while this may be hard to hear, his actions showed a complete disregard for the well being of yourself and the baby

Psychology is a social science.
but what's the actual definition of a soft science, we know that hard sciences rely on empirical evidence, observation, quantifiable data and a scientific method, while soft sciences seems to be another means of articulating 'pseudoscience' in order not to offend those people working in the field...
so poid, can you give us a definition and description of 'soft science'
http://www.wisegeek.com/topics/soft-science.htm#
Quote:
The term “soft science” is sometimes used to refer to branches of scientific inquiry which rely more on conjecture and qualitative analysis than rigorous adherence to the scientific method. “Soft science” is often used as a pejorative, differentiating it from “hard science,” with the implication that only hard science is real science.
It may not adhere rigorously to the scientific method, but doesn't mean that it adheres to an invalid scientific method; psychological theories are backed up by evidence, whereas pseudoscientific ones are not.

Just because something is inheritable doesn't mean that it will necessarily be inherited, I don't know what gives you that idea.
and while the study you linked ot of more than 4000 alcoholics show that only 30% had at least one parent that was an alcoholic... it's pseudoscience because they drew this heritability claim with such a small number of cases where the parent s were addicted to a substance
Here's a study with different figures:
The Behavioral Genetics of Alcoholism
Quote:
Heritability estimates suggest that approximately 50% to 60% of the variability in alcoholism liability is associated with genetic factors.

Psychology is a social science, that's how.
You should post in my thread in PSP.
lol... circular argument
define how it's a science, in fact as I'd already requested, define soft science
How is that a circular argument? Psychologists are practitioners of a certain category of science called the "social sciences"; any practitioner of any kind of science is a scientist.
PS--sorry for derailing this thread, I made one in PSP about this topic so we could discuss it there.

I don't wanna be an ass and continue to derail this thread; if you'd like to continue the discussion, we should do it here instead.
