Agar question

If I used 40 grams of agar instead of 20g per liter, am I correct in thinking that the agar would solidify at a higher temperature than agar at 20g/L?

It won't solidify at a higher temp it will just be more firm when it sets. I found that more agar seems to bind the water more firmly into the agar, the result seems more dry and growth appears to be retarded. I haven't timed it or done any side by side tests but having done it both ways I'd stick to the amount recommended.

Thanks, I've been doing it this way a while because I thought I misread how much agar to put in a Liter, thanks to a slightly vague description of how much agar to use in the "grocery agar tek". Also, one of my batches a long time ago came out real soft so I upped the agar amount. I'll follow directions from now on with it.
Anyway, the mycelium growth on 40 grams/liter agar didn't seem much slower than with 20g/ liter (as far as I remember), BUT, the reason I ask is because when I try to pour agar that's cool enough to handle with my bare hands (as RR suggests), I find the agar solidifying in the container before the other half of the petris is poured
I use a flowhood.

I don't know if there's anything unique to gels, but chemically speaking, adding a solute to water lowers the freezing point so it should solidify at a lower temperature.
I don't have any scales at home but have made many, many plates of different kinds of agar and and use about 5 tbsp/L, which is about 25g. Sometimes a little more, since I hate tearing the agar when working with it. I don't worry about letting it cool much, just grab a hot glove, swirl, and pour QUICK, because if you're working with more than 10 plates or so, it'll be goopy before you're done, like you said.
Dunno if it hurts growth. My oyster clones seemed to love it.

You're right, but the reason for doing that is to avoid condensation. I have big problems with condensation. Oysters odon't mind too much, because they're aggressive, but other species slow down with too much water.
Then the bacteria don't help either.

I heat my agar in mason jars, and I know it seems strange but instead of pouring it I suck it up with a syringe and shoot it into dishes... I work in front of a flow hood also but I think the act of sucking up melted agar from under the surface would help people with contam probs. I really hate the dripping you get with pouring, syringes are the way to go. 5cc per dish by the way. if you work slow or store longer in dishes up the agar. 5 cc is pretty thin in a 60 mm dish and eventually it'll dry out....if you use real parafilm maybe not but I use 1 inch sections of saran wrap.
