excess water stalling jars?
    #1418852 - 03/30/03 09:36 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Hey, everyone!  First post

A foaf has 6 pf jars colonizing at 80-85 deg (innoculated 2 weeks ago; the first week was spent at about 60 deg).  One jar is going very nicely, about 80% done and making fast progress.  2 others are about 40-50 % through, but are stalled; the mycelium in these jars isn't nearly as fluffy and healthy looking as in the first.  The other 3 have little to no mycelium growth.  A couple days ago he added some more spore solution to these 3 jars (bad idea?), and still not much progress.

I'm thinking that when he first made up the substrate, too much water was added and this is what may be slowing down the jars.  As far as I know, no contamination.  He tells me the mycelium is perfectly white.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

He already did, a couple days ago. Sorry for not mentioning that. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Any other input? Also, it seems that on the jars that aren't doing so well the substrate color is a little bit bluish-grey. The 40-50 % jars also have this tinge, while the best jar's substrate color is just grey. I really hope this doesn't mean contamination.

thanks.

Update.  My best jar seems to be nearly 100% colonized   I see some new mycelium growth on some of my other jars, but a lot of it is "off-white."  Perhaps just very early formation of perfectly healthy mycelium.  Water is now literally dripping out of the holes of my worst jars...and I also notice a weird grey colored growth on one of these jars.

Hopefully I should have some pics up here soon so you guys know what I'm actually talking about.

Another q:  I was originally planning a 60/40 or 50/50 coir/verm casing for all my cakes, but since most suck or are stalled, should I go ahead and case that one good jar early, for kicks?

Thanks.

p.s. Yes, I admit they're my jars ::blush::
