Blue stem question
    #1418827 - 03/30/03 09:15 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

The mycologist removed the mushroom when it was ready to be picked. Some of bottom ofthe shroom had some perilite on it which had fused so to say with the cake, so he removd it wih a sterile knife.
All of the sudden in no time flat the stems inner section started to turn blue. And worked it's way to the out side of the stem. He said hmmmm.......so he cut up a little higher, the same thing. the stem was turning blue. Is this a sign of somthing bad? or is it part of the normal drying faze? the uneducated mycologist thanks all who helps.

Psilocybe Cubensis and many more psychadelic mushrooms bruise when they are handled.

No offense, but I'm surprised you could get to the point that you could be harvesting without knowing about the resulting blue from oxidation of chemicals within the mushroom.

It is thought that this is from the oxidation of psilocin, but blueing reaction has not been proven to be linked to potency or even activity at all.  There are some inactive species that blue, so it is not necessarily an idication of activity.

So to answer your question: its not really an indication of something bad, although it is generallly accepted that it is an idication of loss of potency, so one would want to minimize bruising/blueing.  Some blueing may occur during drying, which is pretty normal but it shouldn't be too much. If they get a lot of blue, one would need to find and eliminate the source of oxidation. (perhaps too much heat, or exposure to air)

Have fun
