Growing wood lovers..... on honey?!?
    #14188004 - 03/26/11 05:39 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

hello. figures this would be the place to some answers.
I was recently gifted a jar o honey that was supposedly inoculated with azuresen mycelium...
that's what I was told.

I was interested, even though I'm pretty damn sure azies, not most anything. can grow on honey.
I mean correct me I I'm wrong bit that just seems silly.

aperently the person who started it had some success getting something to grow in there, tho I never saw it....
also there's cinnamon in the honey, for some reason I'm sure

all and all I dunno what to think of this. seems like it's most lilly all bull shit.
but having someone here confirm that would make me feel good
thanks

yeah. nothing grows on honey for the mist part. that's why people use it to preserve things...like mushrooms

a friend just brought me this jar, k owin how much I love both mushrooms and honey.
Iv been watching it for a week or so and have noticed no growth. also I was told to keep it in the sun.... which makes no scenic if it is azuresence spawn in there

The water activity of honey is too low for almost anything to grow in it... including mushroom mycelium. I could understand if it were a honey liquid culture (around 4% honey) but it's impossible to grow them in pure honey.

could the mycelium be suspended in the honey solution.  Innactive in the solution due to the low water content?

It sounds like you're dealing with someone without a clue.  Perhaps he made a honey LC, but honey is probably the worst choice and I'm no fan of LC regardless of the nutrient source.

If you want to grow azures, germinate some spores on agar and isolate from contaminants. Use the agar to inoculate grains during the winter months.  Then, use these or your grains spawned to sawdust to inoculate outdoor beds in spring.

I have had azures extracted with alcohol and suspended in honey before. Growing it however in pure honey makes no sense.

I'm wondering if honey-water soaked cardboard could be of use with the woodlovers anywhere :strokebeard:
