Bring to field capactiry before or after?

Ive read around here that people bring the sub to field capacity before pasteurizing. This makes little sense when you need to add boiling water(bucket pasteurizing) to pasteurize the substrate, which will then change the field capacity. Any clarification on this? Thanks.

I just let it drain to field capacity after the pasteurizing. Always works fine for me.

From my understanding you add the ingredients to the bucket dry, and then add the specific amount of water which brings it to field capacity (dude that made the tek already measured the correct amount of ingredients and water to bring it to field capacity). I personally don't like that tek. I prefer a true pasteurization. Use a big clean pot, add ingredients, slowly add water and stirring until it is at field capacity. Add to quart jars and pasteurize in a pot of water (water 3/4 up the jars). I add the coir to the pot first. Then slowly add water so that it soaks it up and then you can break it up.....
Your post was kind of confusing in my opinion. The first time I ever did bulk I added everything to a pot and covered with water. Heated it up and pasteurized. After that I let cool a little and then hand squeezed to field capacity and it still worked. But this adds extra vectors for contams.....Not recommended but I was a rookie...

I use the pillowcase method, mix up my sub completely dry, put it in my pillowcase in the pc without the lid on, put some weights on it and fill with water about 1/2 an inch above the pillowcase, pop it on the stove at 160-170 for an hour and a half, put it in my dish strainer and let it cool and drain for 5-8 hours, however long it takes to fully cool down is usually enough for it to drain to field capacity.
Haven't had any contams with this method and ive been using it for almost two years now.
just use whatever you find works best after trial and error.

Yeah, and don't forget the meat thermometer. Start your timer after the center is at a good temp....
