after knowing someone who's a career guy, been enlisted for 13 years, officer, went to college via the gi bill, green and gold program etc, and having been a civilian in a military family serving overseas (ex wife works for the navy), i'd have to say not just no, but fuck no.
one thing to remember when dealing with the military is that anything they promise you in the way of perks is, at best, going be about 10% as good as what they say with a bunch of bullshit attached to it that they you don't find out until after the fact.
if you think being in the military would be a good career for you and you have a sense of duty to your country that you feel needs fulfilling, then by all means join. if you just need money for school or whatever, get a loan.

I was in the airport once, in uniform, and some lady started talking to me about her kid. She said her son had just joined the Navy, and that he was going to be going to be in the Navy Band, after he finished going to school to become a Boatswain's Mate. She said, the recruiter promised him...

i dunno man. im getting paid to go to college right now because my dad went to iraq after 9/11 and then retired later on (due to age, not because he was horrified or something).
i get paid enough that my tuition is technically free, my rent is paid every month, so are my utilities, and my food costs are covered as well, with a little extra if i manage my money just right. i dont have to do shit and i live good as hell, all because my dad was the man and did what most people on this forum seem to think isnt beneficial to anyone and isnt a 'good' job to have.
not to mention that when you have a decent rank in the military you get paid an assload of money. my brother is 28 and has so much money laying around that he bought a $12,000 watch on a whim. he has 2 cars, and an expensive as hell house. he lives a fuckin dream right now. i cant imagine having that much money when im 28.
the military isnt for me, but you wont ever catch me saying that the military doesnt set you up for monetary success and benefit your entire family.
@OP: nobody on this forum will be able to tell you if joining the military is "worth it". its a personal decision, and it depends on whether that is your thing or not.
edit: keep this in mind as well, most everyone here is extremely biased against the military, and they love to spread misinformation (as in the post i quoted, which claims the military's benefits dont live up to what they promise)

the navy or air force is, like someone else said. But you'd need to choose a good field or tech skill but it'll most likely still be a middle class type job. Unless your training to work at nasa or some high paying field. Its all a big ass joke filled with hypocrisy tho with alotta lame ass hateful people running the show.

i suppose it does work out for some, but for me i experienced A LOT of b/s with our move and getting set up in another country. and after hearing all of the horror stories from my friend who i've known since he was a kid before he enlisted at 18, i just don't see the benefit of it.
that's not a slight against our soldiers btw. i'm proud to have played even a small role in it, even if i disagree with some of my country's politics, and i have nothing but love for the guys out there fighting. i sincerely mean that. i'm just extremely unimpressed with how the armed forces are run administratively, which by my estimation is by people with shit for brains. i think the crux of the problem is the department of defense's involvement.
