First time WBS... worried
    #1418387 - 03/30/03 04:03 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

This is the first time my friend has attempted to grow on WBS. He's followed the WBS guide on fungifun.org, using pint jars, and a few half-pints a had left over. The water content and everythign looks good, he sterilized them at 15 psi for an hour, let cool over night, and inoculated some with mazatapec and some with malabar from TLG. He used between 1 and 3cc's per jar. (it was varied somewhat).

Now, he does not have a method of incubation, though the ambient temperture of the house floats between 74 and 78.... usually between 75 and 76, assuming people arent runnning in and out. He put the jars back into the box they came in, threw a black t-shirt over the top to make sure light didnt leak in, and put them on top of the refridgerator. with a lack of incubator, he figured this would be the best place, with the warm air from the back of the fridge rising.

He inoculated on the 27th, and see no growth. He knows this is too soon to panic, but from other's attempts, it seems like he should have seen growth by now. He's being patient, but was wondering if the temps were going to be ok, as they arent going tto get over 75-ish in that location. Some of the jars felt cool to the touch (obviously... but they felt cooler than the air).

He though about putting them in a cabinet w/ an incandescent over them, but hte cabinets are pretty cold, and He'snot sure that would cut it. Also, he has a 150watt HPS light he could use as a heat source if need be, but he'd really rather not go that route.

Any advice?

is there some source of air exchange? if it's only been three days then you really shouldn't worry at all. in my friend's experience it takes 3-7 days for growth to start, and sometimes even a bit longer

kramer says to smoke a big fat cuban blunt with the weed your freind grew and just chill
kramer dosn't even look at his jars for 7-10 days(10-14 days in your case)
because the more you look at them
the more you handle them
and thats not good.
put them up wait ten days and check them then
keep us posted

at least thats what kramer says:)

Yes.. the jars have 2 holes on top. one is slightly larger than the diameter of a common screwdriver, with polyfill in it. the other is about needle-sized for inoculation.. my friend kept it taped over before and after injection.

thanks for the quick response guys. its appreciated.

WBS tends to take a while to show signs of growth. Your temps aren't ideal, but they should be ok. If you want to speed things up significantly just build a cheap incubator using two rubbermade bins an a fish tank heater.

You may see results faster if you shake it vigorously after inoculating.

Confirmed here.

Inoculate, give a good shake, wait til you see some good growth,
then shake again.

Don't worry, bro - once it starts going, you'll wonder what the hell's wrong with BRF

>kramer says to smoke a big fat cuban blunt with the weed your freind grew and just chill

as far as keeping you posted:

my friend smoked a monster blunt as per your recommendation. his g/f brought him some vermiculite form home, so he was going to use the low-height wide mouth 1/2 pint jars he had for BRF cakes. when he made up the WBS jars, he went ahead and used 3 of them that were left over from a previous BRF run. since he has the verm, and was told that 1/2 pints of this nature arent very good for grain, he was going to dump the 3 jars. when he checked them, they were quite fuzzy. excited, he checked the boxes of pint jars... they are exploding with mycelium! way faster than he would have expected, too.

will probably provide more details as he goes along, and may ask for more advice (he has limited experience).
much thanks.

My foaf usualy see's spore germination & growth within 6 days in quart jars, when jars are incubated at between 80 & 84 F.

My foaf also respectfully disagee's with this shaking thing. When he innoc's with spores, he tends to squirt spore solution - one down the center of the jar & 1 squirt in each corner........... allowing spore solution to run down the inside of the glass.

This places spores WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM... when they germinate.

Once germinated & around 10% colonization. My foaf shakes ONCE, to spread the myc throughout the seed inside the jar.......... then lets it fully colonize.

Myc is tiny & fragile. Shaking is giving it a good BATTERING. It takes 3 to 4 days for it to recover from that battering & begin to grow again.

To much shaking can stall growth IMHO.

Patience & optimal incubating conditions help...... a lot.

My find told me that my mycelium in WBS rebounds after 24 hours. Just what he has observed.

To shake... or not to shake.

I think my goat should shake at 10% and then again at 70%
