    #14183194 - 03/25/11 06:46 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

hi!! ok, trying my first oyster grow im doing 'elm oysters I got 4 quarts ready to be spawned into straw I dont have the polytubing, but i got a five gallon bucket and a laundry basket, ive seen some teks but dont understand, does my container have to be clear??  If my temps wont really change from spawning my straw to fruiting will they still fruit, and if i was to put holes in the bucket how big/far apart should they be, any tips would help!!

4 quarts is enough to do a 1 1/2 bushel laundry basket of pasteurized straw.  Your container does not have to be clear, just have holes punched every 2 " for light to penetrate.  Temps are not such a problem.  Bucket will actually work better and drill 1/4 inch holes every 2" in all directions around bucket.  If using basket you will want to saran wrap outside and top then poke holes around into the slits of the basket.

Also, if you want polytubing best way to start out is to get 3ft wide 4mil thick window plastic and cut to length.  Then fold over and tape seam till tube is less than 18" wide (will make a log with less than 10.5" diameter).  Tie ends with cable ties or something equivalent that will hold well.  Then punch holes every 2" again.

I use buckets, flowerpots, and other containers. They work well.

As far as the holes, there are a few bucket teks in the Gourmet section.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14160137/page/1

There is also a bucket tek, but I don't know if the hole placements are optimal. I get free buckets from a restaurant, colonize with hay, then drill holes after a week.

I have not worked out an optimal size or placement of holes, but I have seen 1" suggested.

You could also pop the straw out after colonization like a giant PF cake and put it in a green house - something I plan to try.

kk, thanks this helps do i colonize the straw in the dark, or does it matter and how do i know when Its time to fruit would I just open the lid to see if its 100% colonized, do i could shock and can these be done outdoors I live in midwest where humidity is usualy 50 and up, I know these prolly dumb questions but ive just never done oysters thanks! n how long and colonized jars wait to be spawned to straw?

I have used plastic grocery bags and bread bags, after rinsing, wiping with alc, and drying.

I don't know what they are made out of.

I also pasteurize in plastic grocery bags in a pan in the oven at 170F until the bags reach 140+ for 2 hours.

Any problems that you see with that?

I add an extra inch of straw on top, then when that is colonized, everything else will be. But I don't think it matters if you are just drilling holes.

One tec used a garbage bag liner in the bucket (holes were drilled first). Then the bag was slit over the holes. I just don't trust ggarbage bag plastic.

does it need to be cold shocked in fridge to initiate fruiting>

Maybe.
I have not cold shocked a bucket. It is cold enough here that I just put it in a cold room (Less than 60F) until it starts fruiting. Or put it outside.

I don't know if cold shocking is necessary.

Oysters cannot be stored really long in my experience. Even at those temperatures the mycelium will get really really thick and impossible to break up, ant they'll probably start fruiting in a month or two. But otherwise they should be perfectly fine.
What I do is I break them up once a week, that way they can last much longer.

this helps my jars are ready im just trying to figure out a way to pasterize enough straw for them since the only barrells I can but have be used for oil etc, and im thinking itd take forever to make enough big pots of straw on the stove for 5 quarts but idk

To pasturize straw, get you a 50 pound bag of Old Roy, or chicken feed, that comes in those polypropylene bags (that are waterproof and can handle high temps).  Put as much stuffed straw in the bag that will fit in the microwave, and add two or three cups of water.  Set the microwave to 5 minutes, and when the time is up, turn the bag to a different corner, and nuke for 5 more minutes.  Nuke for a total of 20 minutes, and each corner of the bag should have been in the upper right hand corner once.  This evenly distributes the steam.  After the 20 minutes total is up, let the bag set in the steam for another 20 minutes or so.  You could add spawn directly to that bag, but they're too valuable to me, so I transfer the straw into another bag and add spawn to it.

I use the Friskies Surfin & Turfin polypropylene cat food bags (which are smaller) to PC stuff, since they can handle the high temps.

I also bought a second microwave (used) so I wouldn't have to hear it from the wife... I just wish I had bought a 17" one like the upstairs one, you can fit lots more in those.  Microwaves are very efficient because all the energy goes into the bag (where you want it).  No energy is wasted trying to heat the bag from the outside in... and it's faster because it takes forever to heat a bag up from the outside.  Don't let anyone tell you it won't work, cause I do it everyday.  The bag gets so steamin' hot you can't hold it by the way.  Good luck.

What about nuking a small 5 litre plastic pail up, fill it with substrate, add enough water, lid on then nuke?  Would it need 20 minutes?

It might save on mess...hmmm I just have to figure out which aussie products come in PP bags, or I guess I don't have to line the pail.
