Do painkillers inhibit awareness?
    #14181863 - 03/25/11 12:27 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have an old back injury from 11 years ago that is becoming very painful now, so much so that I feel like it affects my concentration and my ability to communicate effectively with people.  Its funny though, when I'm sober the pain is really not that bad, but I have a lot of trouble connecting to people, even family.. But when I get stoned, I feel the pain more intensely than ever, but at least I can focus and really actually have a meaningful conversation.  I'm confused as to whether or not the pain is always that intense, but like as a defense mechanism I have become numb to it.  What are your thoughts on this?

Also I am thinking about taking an NSAID like Ibuprofin on a daily basis, but am worried that it may affect my emotional awareness and further cripple my ability to communicate well.  Does anybody know if NSAIDs do this, or is it just opiates like Oxycodene that numb you out?

Thanks.

Well Im not sure about ibuprofen, but I took naproxen (prescription NSAID) not too long ago, also for back problems. It worked somewhat, but overall just made me really tired. I wouldn't think a daily ibuprofen would have that much effect, but I don't really know...

If you're looking for an alternative to opiates you might want to read about kratom. It's a legal herb which has analgesic properties on par with hydrocodone (for me at least), while also giving stimulant effects. It's not for everyday use, but it's definitely nice to have on hand.

any substance is going to reduce your clarity of mind a little bit, but i wouldn't think ibuprofen would have too much effect.  Certainly better than opiates as far as lucidity goes

There is no answer to your question because "painkiller" is open to interpretation.  If you are talking about NSAID's, no it will not inhibit your awareness.  If you are talking about Opiates, most likely yes (depending on dose and tolerance) they will make you sedated.  Most people who are sedated are less aware of their surroundings.

@ OP

I believe that the pain is definitely not as intense as you percieve it to be.

for the last year I've had bad problems with my shoulders and last month they were hurting the most they ever have because I had been doing some farm work for my uncle. when I finished I was thinking 'fuck this reallllly hurts'

About 2 weeks ago I had a general anesthetic for removal of wisdom teeth and when I woke up the pain in my shoulders had been reduced to a very minor annoyance!

That was two weeks ago and the pain has not come back... I am still aware that my shoulders are injured but there is no pain.

Now I have no idea what happened but it seems like when I was given the anesthetic it reset something in my body/brain...
