Frozen agar plates- suggestions?
    #14181661 - 03/25/11 11:44 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

The fridge where I keep agar plates froze overnight. I now have frozen plates of reishi, shitake, oysters (pearl, pink, blue, golden), cordyceps, shaggy manes, hericium, and Elm oysters.

Any comments on which species might pull through the freeze and which I need to go to slants with?

Sucks, but I guess this is why we have slants kept in different locations eh?

You may have lost your pinks. The rest should be alive.

Slants should be done for all your stock cultures.  If there is not wood in with them then chances are they are all dead.  Only way to be sure is to take them out and let recolonize for few days.  If no fuzzy mycellial growth shows than the culture is most likely dead.

Evolution is Lamarckism in disguise.  Adaptation never creates a new species or trait, but rather the new species/trait always existed within the parent DNA until circumstances allowed it to be activated.  For instance, every wolf has the DNA for poodles, but that DNA would never be revealed without man selectively breeding for it.

Just to update, Elm Oysters and Reishi actually seemed to have benefited from the freeze. Probably not really, but once they were thawed out the plates went gang-busters with growth even at 4C.

Lost were the Golden Oysters, Pink Oysters, Taragon Oysters, Shaggy Manes, and a wild cloned Herecium culture I had.

Back to slants if I want to get them going again, but for now other edibles demand attention.
