Organic humus and manure for casing?
    #1418132 - 03/30/03 12:51 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My friend called me the otherday and told me he had a bag of "organic humus and manure" and that he was thinking of using it for some kind of casing and wanted to know what I thought about it? I had to tell him to wait so I could ask someone here because to be honest I'm a complete noob myself so if any of you guru's out there know if this would be a good case material please let me know. Also I went by his place the other day and noticed the vermiculite he is using is alot finer than the stuff I use (his being not much more than the consistency of coarse sand) I have read here and elsewhere that too fine a grade of vermiculite can be a bad thing but have also heard of people (at least one person) tossing there vermiculite into the blender for a couple of sec's to "thin it out a little" and was wondering if he tries to grow PF style would he even be able to grow with his Verm like that. Thanks in advance for any and all replys

Your casing should have no nutrients in it. Like Coir/Verm. Get the Coco coir at the pet shop. You can use the organic humus and manure to spawn with what ever you have colonized.
peace

Yes you can. Use a cheese grater.

Yes you can. Use a cheese grater. Stick with Pf tack till you get it all down then move on slowley or you will make many mistakes.

Yes it must be pasteurized. Also the standard ratio is 1 to 10 spawn to bulk. You can speed up colonization time by adding more spawn of course.

store cow poop with humus is all good. no problems there.

Yes, pasteurize it.

Add straw, (* mainly for water retention and for fluffing the casing abit.. it was found that just the poop and humus pack down too much, the straw helps give it good consistency. )

and PF cakes are fine.

Oh believe me I personaly would not try my hand at anything other than a PF or modified PF TEK but my friend on the other hand pretty much wanted to try something else because I told him I havent had any luck with the PF TEK yet. And a cheese grater you do mean just grate PF style cakes right? or was that a joke (sorry still quite new to all this)

also you may want to mix in a little straw(maybe even 50/50) as kramer thinks it helps aireate the substrate
