They sit in the same family Strophariaceae, this is why they look similar in many respects, also why Leratiomyces ceres/Stropharia aurantiaca are mistaken for subs so often I would guess.
Edit: Edit for clarity.

So is there different variations of the pholiota/inocybe/conocybe genus , some which are active and some which are toxic??
Different species.

The picture is bad, but it does not look like a Psilocybe to me. Too viscid and the stature is wrong.

Hey guys I'm 100% certain that the mushrooms in that photo weren't subs. They were slimy and very delicate, and were a lot smaller in real life then the photo appears. They grew in huge clusters that looked like seaweed. Checked my favourite spot today, and only found a lone stroph growing there
-------------------- My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war And ribbons of euphoria Orange is young, full of daring But very unsteady for the first go-round My yellow in this case is not so mellow In fact I'm trying to say it's frigthtened like me And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from Giving my life to a rainbow like you

Inner eastern melbourne. Even ran into another guy clearly looking for mushrooms. We smiled and that was that.

Sweet. Thanks for everyones input.
I found so many of these today: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leratiomyces_ceres
In one park alone there would of been thousands. If only they were subs. Can these be a good indicator that subs maybe around though?

Yeah, they grow in the same habitat.. There won't necessarily be subs wherever strophs are, though, of course.

Oh i saw thousands of them as well! How annoying is it when you take a quick glimpse and think, oh shit look at all them subs, then realize everything about them is different. They are slimy as well :/
Here is a picture to show you a few of the strophs i stumbled upon.

yeah, those are good indicators of subs though.
I went throuhg a park near my house and saw thousands of those. At first glance i was disapointed because i saw no subs, but upon closer inspection, there was actually heaps of subs hidden away in tiny patches all throughout the park.
I'd suggest going back and searching your area like a grid alot more closely. it's fairly likely that there will be subs in that area somewhere.

i just smile and wave to people or be nice to people. I mean they are going to see you regardless of what you do, so i think its better to atleast be nice, approachable and try to make a good impression atleast.
I mean i've even had convos with random people walkin their dogs, he comes up to me and his like mushrooms? and im like yep, and his like magic? and like haha yep, and he was like yeah me too i used to as well (he was like 35-40), and he was just tellin me some safety tips and whatnot and having a general chat. people are chill with it in my experience. As long as your not in their front yard or something.
I'm sure someone would be willing to send you prints, and that you will find numerous of your own once you find some subs, but even if you had spores this instant you wouldn't see any fruits from that area untill next season. the spores have to spread the mycelium, which is the white stuff that the mushrooms grow out of.
