I just started picking this year and have found many patches, and I just started to dry them. I was wondering if it is alright that the caps turn a little black in some places and that some of the caps start to deteriorate a little bit.

Yesterday after going to my new patch for the 2nd time, found about 30 decent size ones and was happy with that.. (no pics) left heaps of pins so its all good, but the day of picking hadnt ended yet!! Walked up my street coming back from work I found about 50 of the biggest, lushest looking specimens I have ever seen, ran over last night in the safety of the dark and snipped them off, there was 2 massive clusters, the only way to cut them off was to literally push the top back and sheer the mushrooms off because they were so thick and close together, it was like i was trimming a hedge or something if you know what i mean, kinda ridiculous.
Heres pics of the haul and a couple near a lighter for size comparison..

Did take a picture of the patch and will upload later when I find the cord.

In need of some help. I want to go out hunting in the northern suburbs but I'm not sure were to go, what to look for etc.
I have a rough idea, like pine forrests and on decomposing wood, but I want as much info as possible before I do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys. I have a question. Sorry if it's not related to the board, but this is the only place I can ask really and know I'm talking to Victorians.
So, me and my mate picked a heap of P. Subs at the start of the season. We got him to dry them with ducted heating, but they aren't cracker dry.
We were going to trip last night but didn't because I wasn't sure whether they were safe to eat. Basically, they are all shriveled up and the caps crush to dust, but the stems still have a bit of bend to them. So they weren't 'cracker' dry. And these mushrooms would be quite a few weeks old now. And I heard you can't eat dry ones unless they are cracker dry.
So what I'm asking is basically were these safe to eat? How long are mushrooms that are 95% dry safe to keep and eat? There wasn't any signs of rot or moulding, but they weren't as I said 100% dry.
Thanks very much! Appreciate it!

There is a few ways. Most obvious being their look, but if you aren't experienced then I guess this is hard.
Also, spore print helps greatly, as spore prints differ from species to species.
Lastly, you can pinch the edges of the cap or stem. Wait a minute or so and you should start to see bluish darkening called 'bruising'. This is a sign of a pcyhoactive mushroom. Also, faint blue 'veins' through the stem is also a sign of this.

Im sure they are fine to dose. But if your realy that unsure about eating em, make tea. Should kill bacteria and germs and such
have fun
Yeah so bluing is the main thing your looking for. If it doesnt blue with in 24 hours, its not active Also if you not sure if its bluing or not, take a spore print like highroad said. The print should be brown with a purple look to it. Or purple with a brown look to it. They can vairy if in doubt, chuck em out

Can you even make tea with dried mushrooms?
And do you happen to know how long you can keep mushrooms that are almost totally dry?
