Most of those look inactive. Throw out the ones with the red tops, they are not what you are looking for. They are strophs yes? And with the more creamy ones that you found, do they bruise blue when you pinch the stem? i think they could be P.subs, but wait for a trusted Id'er. But yeah, the red ones, no good.

I've found two new patches in the last couple of days. Only managed 20 or so from the first one, but the second one had a fair amount - unfortunately right on the side of a main road though. Picked about 50 or so last night, will verify and photograph later on. Both patches in outer eastern suburbs.
Last night's haul

I'l have to make a wish when I eat this one

Hey guys, i think one of my spots may be contaminated. The P.subs are fruiting like crazy in the spot, though under each one on the grills, there are hundreds of little grey / black bugs. They are so small you can't really see them, but they are on every mushroom i pick. I left the ones that had them at the spot, and kept the ones that didnt (about 150 or so). Sorry i can't provide a photo because my camera isn't good enough to show them as it has no macro.

Tizjack I find that if I pick in forests the mushrooms seem to have the bugs u speak of. All the ones I pick in suburbia though seem pretty clean. Last year I put a few of the bigger shrooms together in a box with paper to dry out. There were a couple though that were a bit older, prob a day or two past their prime to be picked. I left them for a few days and they'd all started to decompose. All into a soft gunk thing. Turns out that those bugs were in the older mushrooms and when I put them with the other ones they got into all of em. The bugs were also about 10x the size as when I first picked em. I don't know, ever since then I don't mix my mushrooms around whilst drying. I'd probably try to pick the shrooms just before they opened up if I were u though. The ones that are already open will prob have the bugs and there's no big deal leaving a few to drop their spores for next season

I wouldn't worry too much about bugs as long as they don't make the mushroom rot/smell... just dry them as quick as possible. I've been having bug problems too, i'm finding way more maggots/bugs than previous years. I dunno if its coz i'm inspecting them harder this year though ?? I've been throwing out 10-20% of my finds coz i've been letting them air dry without a fan and the maggots are turning them smelly and bad. My last find i put them straight under a fan and within 6 hours all of the bugs had evacuated & were dead & dried up under the mushrooms.

Went out today for my second official hunt for 2011 season and my luck this time has paid off a little... still the season is barely just starting. Many pins around but way too early my friends.
Checked both of my normal bush patches, more like foresty areas and only one had some subs poking through.
I managed to collect about 10 grams worth if dried. While I am greatful for such a nice lil hunt, it's still too early. The aseason will really start for my patches around mid to late May. So got another 2-3 weeks before anything decent starts to grow.
But here are the photos from today.
This is my first find of the 2011 season. A lonely sub.

Some cute pin.

A little sub.

Yeah that's the subs I like!

A fat head sub, chubby one, nearly got away from me

Here is the chubby sub picked

Some more

So many pins

What is this? No its not an Amanita Muscaria.

Indulged in some wild blackberries, these don't seem to be sprayed as they were in a public forest area with no signs of chemicals around. Also The sub season really kicks in when you can't find anymore blackberries... the berry season ends, when the mushy season begins.

Sub habitat

A gorgeous day

My haul in the end, not bad for April, guessing about 10 grams dry

I will go back late May for more subs, should be in full swing by then.

That's actually an old ratty sub keeping those youngin's protected. I thought it quite cool the way they were growing underneath.
You had a good hunt by the looks of things.
This one below is a Russula, more than likely Russula persanguinea

Ah I see. Great photo!
Thanks, my hunt was quiet nice, had my dog along for company too.
That red Russula popped up today frequently.
