Here we go folks A few (100 or so) wonderful and yummy subs! Many more were picked than that which are here featured!
I couldnt believe my luck... pulled up to teach a course and stressing about having to get everything in order, i look into the garden in front of me and wham! everywhere!
I wish I could have taken the photos in the environment... so amazing and perfectly sheltered... The environment there was so perfect you can see the spores, pre printed on top of one another to make my life easier!!

I've recently become interested in magic mushrooms and would rather pick them and get the full experience. I've read a fair bit through the site and this thread in particular just because I live in melbourne. I get the general iddea of where to look for them but I have a few more questions as at the moment I cannot get a book and I would rather hear it from you guys than looking elsewhere. First question is when do I know to pick the mushroom as I'm not sure if they are too small at any time or there is a prime time in their growth? And then what do I do once I haVe picked it, will the blue bruising that is mentioned happen straight away. And once I have obtained a positive ID that they are active when can they be eaten? Thank you so much.

Blue bruising will show up anyware from already there to hours latter. Just pinch the stems on one of them.
Pick them when there their "veil" is breaking or when there caps had already opened. Just don't pick the little ones that look like dicks. Lol.
You are looking for psilocybe subaeruginosa. Ussaly called "sub's" around here.
Search for them on this forum and read up on their habitat and other thing about them..
Allways make sure they have a brown purple spore print.
Make sure every one you pick shows blue bruising.
Once you pick them you can dry them under a fan so you can store them. Or if you are wanting to use them all soon, just throw them in the fridge.
Hope I have covered all your questions
There are deadly mushrooms that look alot like psilocybe subaeruginosa. So be carfull.

Will the deadly kind show blue bruising as well? I read on how to do the spore print but I don't know what do with it once I have it? Is it a certain pattern or just the colors Thanks for the answers

The deadly ones -won't- show bluing at all.
The chemicals in magic mushrooms are psilocybin and psilocin. When you pinch or bruise a magic mushroom the chemicals psilocybin and psilocin will react with the oxygen in the air. When this reaction happens the chemicals turn BLUE.
Spore prints are just cutting the cap off a mushroom and putting it on foil or paper until it drops spores. Ussaly takes 24 hours for a good print. You can tell if it's a sub by looking at this spore print. The spores should be a brown purpleish colour.
If you spore print a mushroom, that you think is a sub, and it drops -rusty cinnamon- colourd spores, it's Probably deadly. Do not eat.
The spore Patterns won't matter.
If or when you find "shrooms" make a I'd request in this forum.
Hope I helped

dont pick anything with a brown stem
and anything you find, take photos of it, and create a thread in the " Mushroom Hunting And Identification " forum, and post the pictures in there, and wait for a " Trusted Identifier " to tell you whether or not your mushrooms are safe to eat.

Thanks for all the responses. Helped a ton. Last two questions. What's the difference between eating the mushrooms fresh and eating them dried. And does fresh pretty much mean straight away

You can keep your shrooms fresh in the fridge for up to a week. Just put them in a paper bag.
Fresh shrooms are allways better. And more potent.
Dried shrooms will last pretty much as long as you want. But still very potent.

dried shrooms are technically "more potent by weight"
10 gram dried is far stronger then 10 gram wet
shrooms dry down from 10 fresh grams to 1 dry gram approximately.
make sure you dry them 100% completely before storing dried shrooms, or the will rot and go moldy.

All this rain should be doing us good, but its definatly not cold enough in some parts. As i was walking home this afternoon i looked at the patch of inactives i saw that popped up this morning and they had already started crumbling because of the sun all day.

Ive stored over half a kilo of dried shrooms from last year's season. Still got like 10 grams left dry.
Time to find some more 2011 season subs!

Awwww, I marked my awesome patches last year on GPS on my iPhone, and figured that when I synced my phone they would be stored on my computer. Lost my old iphone, so got a new one and synced up. Now I've lost all of last year's patches! WAAAAAAAAAAH! Good to see Melbourne/Vic back up and running through. Hurrah!
