they need sustained rain. the first few lots of rain really only just saturate the ground and set the conditions for subs, then after that they need more rain to sustain them, because if it dries out again its back to stage 1. this was frustrating for me this season, because one of my local patches would have a megga flush, like atleast 100-200 pins popping up, and then there was just no rain to keep them going, and they all just withered and died before their caps even opened. lose lose situation. :/

Do you know how long the sustained rain has to be sustained? A few days? A week? two?
I went to my usual patches that have died now. The rain we've been having on and off since Sunday I thought would show a few pins. But nothing really. I can still see black rotten ones on the ground. Nothing new though.
Do you think I will have to find some new patches? Or just wait awhile longer...

i'm not sure on the specifics and can't really speak with 100% confidence, thats just my main opinion of things. i'm probably wrong, you should really only take note of what the TI's say, they know their stuff, the rest of the people on here such as myself are usually just talking crap about what they think they know.
after a few days of solid rain things should be good to go.

this was found at my patch after the light rain we've had. i didn't have a chance to look properly (damn dogs in some backyard!) but there should be pins growing as i saw some the other day. i hope these cold fronts keep hitting hard, need the rain. fingers crossed they'll be heaps by this weekend or it's a drive to cranbourne to see a patch. can anyone up my hopes? the mushie in the pic is very fresh so looks promising

went out today and found a fair few + hundreds more pins out there. This is S.a though but Vic gets the same weather patterns as us a cpl days later so you should be good

Yeah, if you keep it moist you could keep it fruiting. But you'd have to visit it a fair bit

hi there fellow psychonauts... Im a long time space cadet originally from western australia where the only decent shrooms we get are psilocybe australis.. nice big meaty gold tops that are real easy to id, mainly because they only grow in one region and they are generally the only fungi that look like that in the area. Blue meanies are also found, but rarely. Since living in melbourne for the last 18 months Im currently in my second of these nasty Victorian winters where stories of psilocybe subaeruginosa growing in melbourne city parks are rife. Last winter I spotted what I thought was a patch and on my travels today I walked through the same park in the same spot in inner city melbs and lo and behold they were back. After extensive googling I decided they fit the description and conditions and took a few samples.. I have used the old "flick then pick" method to harvest them, hoping to spread as many of their spores as possible, like all good shroomers should. Ive never had to do things like spore printing or the like to id them so i would love some advice or references on how to do this for local melbourne psilocybe species.. cant really post photos as my camera phone is garbage but I can give detailed descriptions if any experts out there think they can help.... I dont feel like liver damage as a trade for ignorance and overenthusiasm. Please and thanks...

Yeah sorry guys, I know these weren't subs but forgot to mention so, they just looked cool. The subs I did pick bruised blue and printed accordingly Cheers guys.

Best bet would be to look on the S.A/Vic/NZ/W.A forums for positive confirmd pic of Subs and then compare these to the 1's you found. When they are wet though generaly brownygold top with whiteish stem with blue bruising. Black spore print.

I spent quite a few hours googling photos of psilocybe until I believed they were subs and all of that checks out but do i need a magnifying glass or microscope to check spores? They have left black prints/stains on the newspaper im drying them on in the shape and pattern of their gills, inside the cap all the gills are black and where I have removed the stem from some they have gone a nice blue/grey. I can tell they are a little "mature" but they were still fruiting.... They were found in longish grass in nth melbs under a gum tree with woodchip through the grass and surrounding area. All signs point to yes but is there an easy test for psilocybin? I know of the metol oxidisation test but have not the access or cash for a photo developer compound....

no microscope needed, just note the colour they are on the paper if its black and they are bruising blue and look like pictures of subs you have seen then your probably good to go, cant give more definate answer without pictures though sry

I think you're referring to Psilocybe australiana which is synonymous with Psilocybe subaeruginosa (it's the same species). They should basically look like the ones found in WA. So long as they have the features of subs (caramel coloured cap, white silky stem, etc.), have a purple-brown spore print and bruise blue you should be alright.
