mushh said: update. at one of two patches i go to and one is covered in subs! adult and babies. cant wait to see them after the rains. was scared i wasn't going to find any by next w/e as i want to trip. feel better. anyone who can't find any, keep looking. they're out there! pics below
how awesome is this? bluing happened 1 minute after pinching. looks great next to the purple spores.
this one's so little. doesn't look fresh through.
this is what the subs look like around here. if anyone finds different looking ones please post!
Would love to know what genera these are. Found a lot of these last month and had trouble identifying them.

Took these images of ones I found in my area. I believe they're the same as the ones above. Your middle pic is definately the same as a few I picked.

I'm near 100% sure those are Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Check the stems for blue bruising, they should look like the pic you quoted.

^^^ these are just normal subs to me, they are just a bit bleached from sun exsposure ect.
especially being in wood chips they dont get much over from the some compared to e.g grass, you will find dark caps.

↲my light tan subs are found in long grass. impossible for the sun to reach them. the only dark ones i find are the little ones like my middle pic. are there alot of other types of subs? i get so confused

Psilocybe subaeruginosa are strange, they change to suit the habitat they grow in. eg; if they grow in tall grass, they will have long stems. If grown in direct sunlight, they'll be bleached and ussaly short ime.
Every little thing can change how a sub looks as it matures, its interesting
They are my fav fungi for sure

Reading this Melbourne thread is making me so jealous. Will be moving to Melbourne next year in March so hopefully I'll have more luck then.

subs when they first come up are dark brown colour from my experience. yes you can find light coloured ones in grass but it does mean they are more weathered, and drier. the darker they are the more moist they are, i have picked dark brown caps before, in a few days they lose moisture and cap goes much lighter.
but yeah as locky said, every little bit of variation can change them.

yawn.
Nothing today but I heard there's some decent rain coming this weekend . Anyone have any good suggestions for eastern suburbs? Ive had a wander through Monash Uni but havent found much. Lets face it, the gardens there are probably quite frequently harvested lol.
btw Locky, cheers for that documentary in your sig. Defs worth the watch.

I have only been on 3 or so hunts this season.
I wont bother with subs, they dont grow here. Next season ill move to melbourne for a week or two, and stash up alot of mushrooms. They'll last me and my friends forever

I think everyone in NSW dreams of one day moving to Melbourne where the subs grow at your door steps.
Sad to hear your season is slowing down, after a week of rain and cold temps my patches in NSW are looking healthy again...for NSW anyways.

Oh well, I have a decent stash which should last me until next year.
I might do a final run next weekend.
