I know what mycelium is lol, yeah I don't mind the wait, it's all good in the end Some people just stare me down so bad, I hate it. So I ussaly don't search parks or woodchip gardens, I have found a private spot, which I'm hoping will produce some fruits. Rite environment and all. But if I do happen to search wood chip beds, I go early morning, round 5:30, and take my dog and it's " poop baggie" hahaha I keep the subs in there. ( not with the poop btw )

Quick question. Is it best to leave subs until they fully mature? I mean, obviously it is, but the my spot is quite common so mushrooms are being cultivated pretty much every second day. will this damage the spread of the mushrooms for later months? I cant really do anything about it though.

You should leave them to fully mature, unless of course someone knows about your patch and is raping it...
So heaps of people go to that spot? And pick?

in general i think people say not to pick them untill the cap has fully opened.
and dont disturb the mycelium under the surface by taring them out of the ground, cut them with scissors, fingernails, or hold it at the base and twist the mushroom off its stem.

Ey mate-o's,
I went on my first (ever) serious hunt today ( ) with a chum to a well-known mount in the North-West. It was plenty wet and there were plenty of fungi about, but after a couple of hours, unfortunately I didn't spot anything which I recognised as subs; though twas a most pleasant trek nonetheless.
I know you guys don't like to give away tips too easily and rather the neophytes to explore the literature and traipse through the forest and learn for themselves - which I dig and am doing - but... Once you're in the woodland, apart from the obvious woody debris, decaying matter etc., are there any indicators which you gravitate toward for finding subs? Like (button?) grasses, (pine/eucalyptus?) trees, dark/light, open/enclosed areas etc.? (thanks..)
I'm not sure if you guys are interested in seeing non-active(?) finds or not, but I guess are few pics are better than none. I know it's a crappy pic for ID purposes, but do the guys in picture-1 look like (quite mature) subs at all? I know they caps are very pale and the steam is a bit too brown, but the cap-shape and overall size seem to resemble some sub-pics I've seen.

Yes, unfortunately i know of many people that pick there. And the lack of respect for the land around it makes me angry. Beer bottles everywhere ect. I have another patch that i think it unknown though. But atm only strophs are growing there, and im unsure if Subs will also grow there.
Yeah, i always cut the stem with scissors and respect the land as much as possible. ie: picking up other peoples rubbish around the patch.

You should allow them to mature and drop spores, if you are taking pins with the idea in mind that somebody else is going to rape "your patch" then you probably need to realise that it's not anybodys patch and if you are taking pins you are doing exactly the same.
Semantics aside you should always let them mature regardless of what idea you come up with to justify picking them.

oh no no, i never pick them when they are pins. Ever. What's the point? I would rather them spread all their spores. Today i left probably over 30 pins that i will re visit in about 2 days. Is that long enough?

realy makes my sad how people treat their hunting grounds I realy dont know what you could possibly do except find a differnt spot Makes me sick lol Maybe make some patches far away from there, so when the time comes you have shit loads of sub's all to yourself and only havest what you need at the time...
But for now, I guess you have to put up with that shit

By "your patch" I meant a patch made with chips etc etc, not a natural one. Maybe if you come across these people, tell them how there will be pleanty if we respect the land and only pick adults

Well, i hear strophs grow in the same habitat as subs. and i know of a little unkown spot where dozens of inactive mushrooms are growing atm. I don't really know how to make a patch using spores. if the environment is already perfect, would it just involve burying the spores in the ground? lol, sorry if the question is extremely stupid, i have never attempted to grow,

Search this website on how to grow sub's outdoors, I think you should print all of the sub's you collect. And If you mess up a patch, it's easily repaired
Basically you are making the spores germinate and grow there roots on a load of chips. Then the chips are placed in suitable conditions and they should work themselves out.
That is VERY brief, you will need to follow a good tek to get it rite

Stem butts is much easier, simply cut out some stem butts with a bit of white rhyzomorphic mycelium attached and place on soaked corrogated cardboard (peeled in two to expose corrugated layer) or egg box in a tub or large jar. Boil some hardwood chips till they sink (to achieve field capacity/maximum hydration) and cover. Smaller chips/shavings means faster colinisation at first. Cover your project with tin foil but add a few holes for fresh air exchange. Do not let dry, mist occasionally if needed.
The mycelium will grow out and colinise all the chips. You then just add more soaked chips and then come Spring bury in a moist shaded location with more chips. There is loads on this process on The Shroomery and elsewhere, though it requires patience.
The process is the same for all the woodlovers.
Or you could just chuck some stem butts down in potential locations and they should grow out and colinise their surroundings resulting in fruits there in future seasons!

Awesome, looks like you found one of my favourite mushrooms Mycena clarkeana!

I basically look in places that retain moisture/humidity. Southern slopes of hills, low lying areas, closed canopy, near waterways (creeks, ponds, etc). This post by msanchez240 probably gives a better description.

I went for my first hunt mid day today, in one of my paddocks, found this in some cow poo. I've had very little luck recently, there's been a lot of amanita around though. Heaps! Anyway, what do we think this could be?
