this really pisses me off.. help me put this explanation into lamins terms shroomery lol
my friend claims she can be completely thoughtless. like.. she just thinks about nothing.. i tried googlein it a few times n nothing really good came up for it.
as far as i know.. it impossible unless your unconscious or your having an OBE or something crazy like that.
now.. i always have some sort of thought. even if i just dont realise it. theres always a thought there. like in a conversation, your thinking about what to say next and your comprehending the words that are being thrown back at you and im thinking about typing this right now. i know its a bit difficult to explain because our brains process so much shit within such a short time frame.
i try to explain to this girl.. if you were to have no thoughts.. you simply wouldnt be conscious. i dont know how else i can elaborate on it because she still claims that she can do it.
i believe that thoughts are consciousness.. am i right or not right? your just always thinking..

Meditation can be good practice for this. Im not sure if it can be done perfectly, but I have certainly had times where Im close to thoughtlessness (and Im not talking about in the political forum ).

I can also be thoughtless like your friend. Its a skill that i've picked up. Doing a lot of nonsense shit like work and "previously" highschool. Back in the day I just didnt want to be there so I would take myself out of the equation. You cant think about how much you hate chemistry if your brain is turned off.
Some people call it autopilot but mines a refined form where I know where im at but I just clear my mind of useless thoughts and get what needs to be done done without over thinking it.

everybody has experienced 'thoughtlessness' at one point in your life. think of when you're in a fight, or playing a highly intense basketball/football game. you act on impulse and don't really think about what's going on, you're simply making whatever move you can before thinking about it and during that time your mind is pretty much absent of thought.

I dated a girl that told me this happens to her, she'd always use it as an excuse to be a bitch. I think she has serious mental problems though, I don't see how you could possibly be thinking about "nothing" and just completely blackout without the help of drugs or getting whaled in the head.

You know when you're really stoned and you just kind of stare at nothing in some dazed form of mental numpfth? When that happens to me it's as if there are no thoughts in my head. Maybe it's something like that?

Does thinking about the word 'nothing' count?
But I can understand these people. I have come close before by thinking about those 'mind clearing questions'.
It's very hard to explain but when it happens Only lasts for 2 or so seconds. But when I think about "If there wasnt living then what would there be?, I get to the stage of thought where I cant explain it and I think about 'nothing'.
I dunno...

I'm pretty sure I know exactly what you mean(!) It's very hard to explain and you said almost exactly what I've said to myself at moments. I think it's where the human personality realizes it's limits and it's ultimate dissolution, necessarily, once the body dies.
It's basically looking right into the void, isn't it? It's specifically the feeling of that awareness more than any intellectual realization. It's distinct and final, hard to focus on for more than two seconds because , plus it's just too mysterious.
I had a moment a year or so ago when I looked too long at it, I felt like I was disappearing and had to move around a lot to make sure I wasn't. I walked all the way around the building I was in several times (sober, minus a coffee earlier in the day) to get myself feeling "grounded" somehow. Maybe that's the moment where a fundamentalist fears hell or a mystic perceives Ultimate Reality or Whatever.
"If there wasnt living then what would there be?, I get to the stage of thought where I can explain it and I think about 'nothing'."

Over time I have been getting better at reaching the point of what I would consider being "thoughtless" during meditation. More or less just being relaxed with out thoughts running amok. Nothing more than a point of awareness, "Just being"...Thoughts will come and go, after a while it gets a little easier to just be.
