Is anyone interested in metal casting?

I made some tools to lift my crucible into and out of my kiln. I's just a basket that fits around the silicon carbide crucible and a pair of hooks to lift and pour the metal into the green sand molds. I felt this was the most efficient way to lift and pour. I made everything you see out of a single piece of 3/8" by 10' rebar and a tiny piece of flat bar, for the lifting hole on the back of the basket. Enjoy.

Have you heard of the RepRap Machine or the Mendel?
one of the things 3d printers do now adays is print molds for jewelry and stuff like that, just throwing that out there. Also, whats up with the Metal Casting world?

I want a RepRap pretty bad. I'd love a Dimension BST machine though. Right now, I'm having my college print some models for a product I'm developing. I'll be using the models to make my molds from. They have a Dimension printer. If I had my own 3D printer, I'd be set to make pretty much anything.

That is awesome, I was looking at some Maker bot videos and thought that process would work great for molds.

I really need some more tools. I need a cross slide and end mill, so I can turn the drill press into a milling machine. I'm afraid the parts are going to come out undersized, but I know if I oversize the molds, I'll need to do some machining. There is also the possibility of my mold patterns not being designed correctly. I'm making the patterns to where I can mold enough pieces for ten of these clamps at a time. There are six different parts of the clamp, so I'll have six patterns. Some parts on the clamp require two pieces per clamp, so some patterns have ten parts and others have twenty. It's just a lot to have to go back and redesign if it's too weak or won't cast properly. I'm using Autocad Inventor, so I can run the stress analysis, but you really won't know if it will work until you've casted, assembled, and tested a few to failure.

Sounds like your working on quantity, which makes sense. What are you working on? is it big?

The length from top to bottom is only eleven inches, so the actual parts I'm casting aren't that large. The entire clamp is about ten inches long total. What you are seeing are linkages for the clamp. The linkage is one of the parts that require two per clamp, so there are twenty total on that pattern. On the left, where the part is split, you can see holes in the bottom half. There are mating pins on the upper half. The bottom half will go into the drag with the mating pin holes face down. I'll pack sand into the drag, flip it, mate the two pattern halves together, put the cope on top, and pack sand in the cope. The large boss you see sticking up from the top split half is what the sprue will attach to. I'll pop the sprue on top of that boss before I pack sand into the cope. When I remove the pattern, I can pull the sprue out from the top of the cope and the pattern halves from the bottom of the cope and top of the drag.

Those fractals, or should I say patterns look great, what ever they are meant for, seems like you thought about it enough.

The clamp is actually a chemistry clamp. It's pretty different from the Fisher brand, three finger clamps, so I hope to get it patented eventually. I plan to try to sell them on eBay, to universities, high schools, and pharmacy companies' labs. It's quite neat watching this slowly go from an idea in my head, to a drawing on the computer, to prototypes, and to the first batch of the actual product. I'm still refining my patterns in Inventor before I have them printed. There is so much to get right and little room for error, if I want to do it once and not have to double back on my steps to redo blotched work.

I might update this thread with my progress. The first movable prototype I have printed will be fucking awesome. The patterns will be cool from a technical standpoint. More thought has went into the design of the patterns than the actual clamp at this point.
