Forum Examines Drug Use Among Kids
    #14178937 - 03/24/11 09:59 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

http://oakpark.patch.com/articles/forum-examines-drug-use-among-kids

Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School, 325 S. Kenilworth Ave., was the stage for Monday's Youth Alcohol and Substance Use Middle School Forum.

Featuring guest speakers and testimonials, the two-hour symposium outlined the dangers of drug use, including the three said to be the most common and available to students: alcohol, tobacco and marijuana.

Dr. Albert Roberts, Dist.97 superintendent, spoke to those dangers first, labeling drug use and abuse a “community issue."

Kids are most at risk, he said, immediately after school — typically before they're parents arrive home from work.

And Oak Park Police Cmdr. Keenan Williams said drug use is more likely to happen in a home rather than on the street or at school.

"It's an issue,” Keenan Williams said. “Our kids are exposed to these substances: alcohol, tobacco and cigarettes."

Audience members were issued a survey addressing the "myths and realities" of the availability, use and abuse of certain substances. The results are posted as a PDF accompaniment to this story; just click on the "view gallery" link at the top-right of this story.

So what are some good resources for parents to keep an eye on their kids?

The Internet and local law enforcement are good, panelists said, but perhaps the best resource is simply being a resourceful, if snoopy, parent.

Williams invited parents check in on their children and do sweeps of their bedroom if there is cause for suspicion.

He urged parents to take a good look at their children when they get home from a friend's house to note their mannerisms, their smell, their level of hunger and what they're saying.

It's all for the greater good, he insisted.

“It is your responsibility to check,” Williams said.

Also taking the podium was the mother of an unidentified OPRF student — who's name was withheld from the panel – who said her son abused marijuana and required a month-long stint at a rehab facility before kicking his habit.

An OPRF student, also anonymous at the request of event organizers, recalled a story about a school-sponsored trip to Costa Rica where he was caught with marijuana, subsequently suspended from school and banned from the school homecoming dance. The student told the crowd he insisted his parents drug test him at home, which he considered the only way to get clean.

Stories like the ones shared by the OPRF student and parent are common because parents have gotten too comfortable with their children, said John Williams Director of Youth Services for Oak Park Township.

“The attitude you have toward drugs, tobacco and alcohol, it matters,” he said.

He reminded the crowd of over 100 to be stern with themselves and with each other, or to be “comfortable with being uncomfortable."

Bert Patania, director of FACE-IT (Families Acting Collaboratively to Educate and Involve Teens), spoke last and directed parents to his program as potential volunteers.

The forum also featured an audience survey meant to clear misconceptions about drug use and abuse, as well as a question-and-answer portion.

A follow up to Monday's forum is planned for 7 p.m. Monday, April 11 at Percy Julian Middle School.

I go to school near oak park and lived there last summer...interesting to see something on here that hits close to home. I've heard pot use is pretty damn high at OPRF. little disturbing how they're basically encouraging the parents of middle school children to suspect their kids of drug use. guilty until proven innocent anyone?

So they want parents to check if their kids smell like pot or have the munchies? Wow. They will probably start doing coke. No scent and no hunger! That'll trick mom!

I knew kids, from a long time ago, that pretty much did coke for those reasons.

Luckily, most of them didn't have jobs, and they didn't have nearly enough funding for their habits.  They made it out okay.  Except this one ginger chick.  She became a bartard cokehead and now she is pregnant.  And still lives with her parents.

Two words:
Marijuana ...Rehab?

--------------------
In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

Shit like this is why my parents insisted I did drugs all throughout high school (even though I didn't smoke pot until almost 21).
