Drying, calcium chloride and runoff.
    #1417735 - 03/30/03 01:02 AM (21 years, 23 days ago)

Ok - here's a setup I was imagining:

)))))))))))))))))))))))) <----A) plastic bowl w/ lid (circle in center of
)))))))))))))))))))))) bottom cut out)
))))))))))))))))))))
))))))))))))))))
_____________________ <----B) cheesecloth
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX <----- C) commercially sold calcium carbonate
in container w/ runoff basket

The drying shrooms are in (A).

1) The initial setup had a small cloth teabag filled with calcium carbonate inside the bowl, the bottom of the bowl punctured numerous times and set on top of (C), but this didn't let enough of the runoff from the teabag get out and fluid ended up all along the bottom of the bowl. Some of this was crystallized, and all of the fluid was oily in texture. I brushed and rinsed off any shrooms that came in touch with this - is that OK, or are they bad to eat now? I think this surprised me since one of the methods described (I think in MMGG) described simply sticking them in a plastic bag with a shot glass filled with the dessicant.

2) How long does drying with just calcium carbonate (as above) usually take?

I'm not sure long long it takes with just CC... I would definately recommend a fan if possible, because then the setup with CC can be majorly simplified and it will take much less time. You don't need runoff. You can really just put them in an open ziplock bag with holes poked thru, then place this on top of the CC in an airtight container.

Great pic, man.

Since the pic feature remains down, ascii pix may be the best we can do. Here's mine:

Heheh, thanks.
Unfortunately, the way I drew it up looks different than the way it turned out int he post because the way the code truncates whitespace.
But it is better than ASCII attempts in the past.

you don't want calcium carbonate - that's chalk (used in casing mixes). you mean calcium chloride.

they'll be fine. CaCO3 is safe to eat. now, if they'd been covered in CaCl2, that'd be a different matter.

if you fan dry first for 12-36 hours, then they'll be cracker dry after 2 days in the desiccant chamber.
