Alter Bridge tops Guitarists Magazine's Best Guitar Solo
    #14177306 - 03/24/11 05:24 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I am a closet AlterBridge fan, but not sure how I feel about this.  Tremonti is a beast though.

From Guitarist Magazine – March 21, 2011

Our Greatest Guitar Solo Of All Time poll certainly caused some fierce debate amongst guitarists… and that was just in our office.

Choosing the ‘greatest’ guitar solo is obviously extremely subjective. But Guitarist had other motivations too – we were eager to see how many modern solos have impressed you all in the thirteen years since our last solo poll.

The results were suprising.

After asking for your nominations, we took the 20 most popular and asked for you vote on which your though was most deserving here and at MusicRadar.com.

The Eagles’ Hotel Caliofrnia, winner thirteen years ago, dropped to fourteenth place in the end. Fanbases were motivated and old favourites suffered. In the end Alter Bridge’s 2007 song Blackbird triumphed with its guitar solo played by two men: Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy. We spoke to the duo to find out their reaction, but first here’s what the top 20 looked like after all the votes were tallied:

1. Alter Bridge – Blackbird (Mark Tremonti/Myles Kennedy) 16.52%
2. Van Halen – Eruption (Eddie Van Halen) 13.58%
3.
Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine (Slash) 11.7%
4. Guns N’ Roses – November Rain (Slash) 9.4%
5. Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour, Pulse: Live) 8.26%
6. Dream Theater – Hollow Years (John Petrucci, Live At Budokan) 5.18%
7.
Dream Theater – Under A Glass Moon (John Petrucci) 1,902 5.16%
8. Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven (Jimmy Page) 4.89%
9.
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird (Gary Rossington/Allen Collins) 3.22%
10.
Megadeth – Tornado Of Souls (Marty Friedman) 3.11%
11.
Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Child (Slight Return) 2.97%
12.
Steve Vai – For the Love Of God 900 2.44%
13. Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower 2.14%
14. The Eagles – Hotel California (Joe Walsh/Don Felder) 2.24%
15.
Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing (Mark Knopfler) 2.17%
16. Led Zeppelin – Since I’ve Been Loving You (Jimmy Page) 2.05%
17.
Gary Moore – Still Got The Blues 1.78%
18.
Michael Jackson – Beat It (Eddie Van Halen) 1.6%
19.
Manic Street Preachers – Motorcycle Emptiness (James Dean Bradfield) 0.74%
20. Jethro Tull – Aqualung (Martin Barre) 0.57%

The solo in question starts at 4:35

Fuck Rolling Stone

The all time greatest guitar solo (and this can't even be contended, any good guitarist will tell you) is this:

It's too much for the average mind to handle, and that's what these best of lists aspire to.

Love Jimi more than the next guy, but Machine Gun is only a so-so solo.
The SONG is great. But it's really a melange of sounds that makes it magnificent. Not just the guitar strumming.

Back on topic, that guitar solo was mediocre.
Right when it started to get alright at the end, he comes in with "Let the wind carry you home..."

Well did a lil research, and the song is a tribute to a friend of theirs that died...

The entire song is a solo, it's not guitar, its music embodied. Pure emotion. Not lame notes plucked out according to what note comes next in the scale, but rather raw untapped screaming emotion.

???

You're a little confused about what constitutes a solo.
A solo does not have drums and a bass guitar.

That list is lame, but I wouldn't expect any less. Rolling Stone is a pile of shit and so is Free Bird.
