Well I just broke my favorite spoon mixing up coir. THe shit was kindof caked to the bottom. I was using damion's elementary coir tek. Anyways, what spoons do you guys use? It would have to be maybe a little longer than normal and super durable. And where would I find one?

I would just check out a thrift shop. I'm sure they would have some heavy duty ones for cheap.

go to a restaurant supply store or check out one of the online restuarant supply places.
-------------------- I am looking for any shiitake strains, any oyster strains, and lions mane cultures. i got cool edibles to trade. "Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing. They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end. They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection..." Roger Rabbit

Best advice in this thread so far. My local restaurant supply is where I sourced this spoon.

i used to work at restaurants and then restaurant supply stores. they litterally make 3 foot long ten guage stainless steel giant spoons for 100 gallon braisers and shit. they will have what you need and cheaper than anywhere else.
instawares.com has fucking everything restaraunt related at dirt cheap.

Walmart. I have a shallow spoon made out of some pretty tough polypropylene plastic, one for $.99. Used it to mix coir for about 2 years now.

I'm going to try and find a restaurant supply store. A 10 gauge spoon sounds pretty badass. I'll have to find something close by so I can go check them out in person. Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinkin about a nice big wooden spoon but wouldn't a wooded utensils be a heightened potential for contamination as wood is more difficult to sterilize (i.e. with isopropyl)..
* Props to my wife for bringing me to my senses on that one

Have great success with a big wooden spoon. When you're mixing coir you don't have to worry too much about contams. I used to use a long-handled plastic spoon but it got too bendy in the heat.

I've used my hands (washed with antibacterial soap beforehand and with ordinary rubber gloves on) for both coir and manure.

I was trying to steer clear of the wooden spoons.
The gloves sound easy though. Does anyone else do this?

I seriously doubt anyone wants to reach into the heat of soaking coir for the first stir. That shit is mad hot. Hence why people are using big spoons.

Oh, well in that case, some alcohol on a pair of rubber gloves is all you need. Some people do it bare handed after a good scrubbing.

i usually use my bare hands to mix the coir and poo then pasteurize after.. i never use gloves really.. spoon for the spawn.. oh hey i have a pic too! see the spoon in the corner of the pic...
i didnt even use alcohol.. just a hand wash.. and wipe hands with a lysol wipe.. if your paranoid im pretty sure the spoon would survive the pc..
