Revelations, Apocalypse...NOW?
    #1417675 - 03/30/03 02:03 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hi. I was just thinking, as I do all the time, about the end of days. I imagine it is quite popular belief among a certain percentage of every Christian population throughout history to believe that THEIR time was THE time. The Bible is extremely vague about a specific date, but tell us instead to watch for certain omens.

I tried to read Revelations the other day, but there was just too much stuff in there that I didn't understand, such as the seven churches of Asia, and others.

Does anyone here who studies the Bible have any theories on what they believe Revelations warns of?

Are these current plagues and bombardments of Israel match up with anything/

It's funny to watch the news coverage of Iraq. I have heard many of the journalists refer to different events as "Biblical", such as the sandstorms and shock and awe bombing. A funny coincidence no doubt but this is the stuff I like disecting.

What do you guys think?

The seven churches of asia refer to literraly seven churches of asia at that time(modern day turkey), whether there symbolic as well?...
If you read revelations about 10 times you will get a better knowledge and mayybee some understanding/
Its not really my place to make assumptions based on specific prophecies..but rather look at the world with open eyes and a see.
Yes every one thinks there time is the end, but today the means are more readily avaliable :smirk:
does it seem like things are going rather fast lately?

Heh if you like revlations read the book of Daniel.

Thanks for the responses gang.

I would like to hear some more thoughts.

I do not know if I will read Daniel, but I may and thanks for the suggestion.

Yesterday I was flipping through the radio stations and stumbled upon a Christian talkshow where they were reading a chapter that I was unfamiliar with.

It was pretty damned anti-semetic, calling the children of Israel "a rebellious house" and God was pretty effin pissed off at his chosen people...

Sometimes when I'm really stoned I like to pretend that the pope was the anti-christ and Muhummad was the second coming.

But of course it's far more likely that this is all a pile of dog shit, but YOU never know, which is what makes all this so fun.

Jehova's witnesses came to my parent's house yesterday. I was there, and my parents were out so I had to talk to them. My parents are friendly, as in they don't turn the witnessses away when they come, so I feel like I oughtta keep up the tradition and say stuff like "huh" and "hmmm" when they tell me the apocalypse is coming.

They tell me that you can know God is coming because the world is in such complete disorder. Children shooting eachother, people starving, war, and youth having premarital sex are all signs that the end is coming. But hold on a second, let's go back to the fall of Rome and the beginning of the dark ages. I mean, they were called the dark ages for a reason, right? I would think Jehova's witnesses would be going absolutely nuts if they were around then because so far, that was by far more apocalyptic for the western, "civilized" world than what's going on today. Or what about the great depression?

Now.. I guess the difference is that there are a hella lotta people on the planet these days, which means that we can't help but get more and more in eachother's way. More human interaction means more human to human problems. Nukes are another big one that makes modern times especially volatile. But what about the cold war? It must have seemed like we were a hair's width from the end during the Cuban missile crisis, but now the soviets are gone, and we have new threats to global security. I don't believe in the end of the world any more. Nothings gonna end, things are just going to get more fucked up. In the next few years, new threats analogous to the cold war dangers will arise, and decline. The population will continue to rise until we hit a critical mass. At some point a deadly disease will strike. It will affect the densley populated areas of the planet first and with the most strength. Urban areas in countries too poor for the citizens to afford private transport will be hit hard. International airport cities would be at a greater risk, I would think.

The specifics I'm listing here are likely, I think, but not necessarilly true. The principle I'm working with is what goes up must come down. As population rises, we approach closer and closer to a point where we have no direction to go but the opposite way. Yi Ching style.

I think a little bit of revelations has been happening these past 2000 years, or it could have had happened in these 2000 years.

I think revelations will happen, just in a different way then most think it will happen.

Dogomush,

Thank you. That was great reading. I think the standard Jahova's witnesses in the United States would tend to be distracted like every other American.

johnnyfive,

Go on. Are you a Christian?

exactly, things rarely happen the way we envision them.
My belief is if you dont deny what is inside you will not be decieved.
I think all religions teach that, others can be a great help along the way, but only you know your way.

What do you believe in?

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

I believe that.

The rest is still up in the air. But it's fun to play "what if".

Especially "What If: Apocalyptica!"

I mean what our good friend up there said.

I think this happens NOW.

Along with some nuclear salad.

the apocolypse of st john (the book of revelations) was almost certainly aimed at & prophsying towards events expected to take place around 90-130 C.E.
still a lot of twisted visions in that book...
quite similar to many other apocolyptic scriptures of that era (christian, jewish, essene, gnostic, etc...)
(note: and that book was one that just barely made it into the canon...)

Hi. Well that book of the Bible has many different interpretations. There are pre-tribulation, post-tribulation, pre-millennia, post-millennia, and amillennia interpretations and each one of them is sure they are right.

We should remember that according to the Christians the Hebrews did not properly interpret the prophesies of the Old Testament either.

Bernard Ramm, New Testament scholar says that any interpretation of prophesy isn't fully understood until after the events it prophesied.

For me personally I do not give much weight to any of those interpretations. I am much more interested in the idea that the central message of the Bible is to love God with your whole heart and your neighbor as yourself.

Without love any other Christian "virtue" is as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. In other words, not worth much.

Cheers,

Love is key in any religion, as is peace. As these are human treasures, they take on divinity. As they are divine, they take on human value. The association is inevitible.

Maybe man tends to focus on a certain aspect of God at different times through life, and through history. As we study everything and try to make sense of it, something that Christianity teaches is impossible, we get an idea of what is looking back at us.

Did we create God or did God create us? I say what difference does it make. Either way God exists. Maybe we created each other, who knows.

Not us, that's for sure because it's God. Why does Islam grow with suh fury? Why does Christianity look so corrupt and ugly?

What is coming, is coming. It is for the best. I hope it's a good show.
