Firewalking
    #14176325 - 03/24/11 02:55 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Fire burns.

But if fire does not burn, what can we conclude?

How can someone walk across fire without suffering burns or blisters to their feet?

Note how I worded it. I did not say anything about their ability to handle pain. That seems easier to explain. I want to know: why don't their feet blister? We have all had the experience of touching a hot pan on the stove and immediately blistering up. So what about these people?

Do we now have evidence of the mind's ability to do... gasp... incredible things?

Maybe. Maybe not. Personally, I remain open-minded about it.

I've seen videos of people doing it without being harmed.  Also monks that could raise or lower their body temp. just through meditation.  All I know is that I'm never going to try it.

I MIGHT agree with that picture if no one could produce any evidence of the claim...

But we have video evidence of people doing it.

So, you can brush it aside if it doesn't fit your reality-construct, or you can alter your reality-construct to include the possibility of things like fire-walking. Or you can offer us some sort of explanation/insight. Your choice.

The reason you are getting jerked around is because this has been debunked way too many times here and elsewhere.

Google is your friend.

Hint: There is a reason it is a brisk firewalk rather than a fire stand. Can you guess why?

So I stumbled across this video which seems to debunk firewalking:

I guess I jumped the gun in my enthusiasm.

Edit: This video by Michael Shermer also debunks firewalking.

Then there is no one who can "firewalk". It needs scientific proof and of course most of all logic.  Mocking is a wonderful tool to show the fools how stupid they are.

Anyone can firewalk. It takes no special mental state. The only question is: why do you need to believe this somehow supercedes physics and is indicative of some super-human potential?

So do you believe that no one is capable of "overcoming" physics as you believe them to be?

I went to a psychotherapist for a couple of sessions once. She tried to get me to do some of this mind over matter crap and all I could think was "what the fuck is this gonna do?". Anyway I saw that fat bitch drinking a bottle of wine at 10am thurs on the train, saved her!

I haven't done it myself, but it is common practice in the region I am from.

Pain denial is actually part of deharming system. Usually the ritual involves drinking of vodka and shanting with a drum. Body is warmed up pretty good, so the heat doesn't come as a shock and tissue remains calm and stiff, not easy to break or collapse in heat. But the main reason feet are not burnt is that skin under your feet is noticeably thicker than skin anywhere else. Even I have some 20 layers of skin on my barefoot, and you can strenghten it by going barefoot in summer.

Secondly hot coals are not like frying oil on your pan. They have some different physical properties. If you own a fireplace or a furnace, next time some hot red choal drops out while you are stirring burning wood, quickly grab it with your bare hand and throw it in the oven again. I have done this in several occasions and I did not feel anything. When you accidentally touch a hot pan, you are not prepared, when you touch coal, you are prepared. There is alsoe a big difference if you touch the heat only with your skin, or the heat spreads through skin -- I think this is the main point in this. Make your skin strong.

It is not about overcoming physics, it is physics.

If you could not do this, and burn your hand, then I have no more explanation: some people just can, others can not.

Ignore the crap new age stuff.

I thought they did explain it. Iceman can control his internal thermostat. He can raise his body temperature higher than the normal individual, which explains his resistance to the cold. That doesn't sound paranormal to me, just extreme discipline over one's own body.

Exactly it's still not an ordinary technique. Something similar could be happening with the fire walkers, keeping the mind calm instead of reacting changes seems to prevent the nervous system from responding, inducing psyiological effects into the body which seem to be detrimental.

I was confused about what you were trying to get at with firewalking, then I realized you thought it might have a paranormal aspect to it.

But yeah, as others have said, it's mostly due to how quickly they move, also the calluses on their feet may play a role as well.

Sorry, but you are STILL over-reaching. Mental discipline does NOT change the temperature at which skin burns.

Not outside of the living organism but  within it, it does. What is occuring within the perceiving mind of the organism effects what is going to happen mechanically within the body. Could it be possible that the cells within the feet are controlled by the nervous system which in turn is controlled by the perception of the organism. The nervous system could kill the cells in the foot faster according to what is happening in the mind.
