Computer/Internet Addict
    #14176220 - 03/24/11 02:36 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have a (not uncommon) problem. I spend far, far too much time on the computer/using the internet. In fact, almost all of my spare time is spent on the computer. I have a job and go to all my classes, but in between it seems all I do is go on the computer. It has become my default activity. I wake up in the mornings, and if I don't have class right away, I go on the computer for as long as I can, killing time until I have to go. Then, I come home and kill more time until I have to go to work.

Its an awful habit, and I have better things to do with myself than read some silly posts on forums (I know, the irony. But there is a time and place, as with all things). But what? That's part of my problem now. I got my first computer when I was thirteen (but have been using one since I was six), and I can no longer remember what I used to do when I didn't have one. Well, I did used to play sports outside with a couple of friends from school. Unfortunately, all of my friends have either moved out of town or are too busy to hang out. I have a very limited social life.

I have some hobbies. For a while, I was rebuilding/servicing a motorcycle I had bought. Actually, I have the engine taken apart (needs new piston rings), but funds are stopping me from completing the project right now. Cultivating mushrooms is great (and can be very time consuming), and in fact, if there's one thing I've learned from them, it's that growing things is fun and that I should enjoy nature more. I also have some books that I would like to read/finish reading, and I want to cook more.

I think the biggest problem with the computer for me is that it's become so integrated into my everyday life. When I need information on something, I go straight to the computer and look it up. Read a word I don't know? Search it in an online dictionary. Read of an ingredient in a recipe that I've never heard of? Wikipedia. Just flat out bored? Shroomery, facebook, email. Ugh.

It's draining the life out of me; there's so much out there to do.

I'm going to challenge myself. Since I always go back to computer by default, I'm going to turn it off for a week. I will allow myself one hour (max) of computer time in the evening to check my email, read a few select posts on the shroomery, and other general musings. This starts tonight.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can break this god awful habit? Like I said, one of my main problems is that I always come back to the computer for information, and I am almost constantly seeking information. I need more direct experience doing things in life, rather than reading on a computer screen. What strategies might help me?

I have the same problem...my life consists of gym, school, work, internet.

I think I might try what you said about turning it off for 1 week.

How old are you?  Most things in life today are going to evolve around technology, not a whole lot we can do about that.  Some things are a must for the computer; bills, e mail, work, shroomery...etc.  What I would do, is when you're on the computer, ask yourself, "is this really accomplishing anything?"  If not, get up and out!  Take those mushies you're growing, pop an 8th, go outside and enjoy nature like you're talking about.

But, if you're lazy, that may be a bigger problem.

Try to set a schedule to restrict yourself, or take drastic measures and block some websites.

Generally just find other hobbies. A few days on a guitar that would have been spent on the computer(and I mean for however many hours you're on the computer), and you REALLY see what a time waster the computer is, with no real value to extract from it. Once you start realizing the things you can accomplish in that time, you'll be more likely to do those things and not waste time.

Sweet, I did it today. I got so much done. I woke up, ate breakfast (instead of browsing the net until I got so hungry that it peeled me from my chair), read the newspaper, cleaned the kitchen, showered, and went to class. I got home and cleaned up a little, then took some leisurely time for an hour, continued cleaning, then ate dinner.

lol, the first thing you notice when you're not always looking at a screen is how much of a mess the place is.

Heh, well, I did follow my plan. It wasn't a relapse post, I waited until my set time to turn the PC back on.

I know, I was just teasing.

Bit of irony in coming back on to tell us how good you did without the computer

Setting a schedule that you will stick to is the best way imo. Living life to a schedule sucks and I hate it but you get used to it.

The guitar idea is great. I always thought I could never play an instrument as I have no rhythm and always sucked in music classes. I also never invested any time in it because I thought it would take so long to do anything. But when my sister gave me a guitar, her generosity and my dream of being able to play bankrupt on selling motivated me to finally try. Well after only a few days of practicing chords for a few hours, I was able to learn bankrupt on selling in 15 mins and can pick up other melodies pretty quick. It's amazing to me what I accomplished in a week with time I would have otherwise wasted on the computer. It was a real eye opener.

Also, bad idea but opiate addiction also helped me to kick my internet addiction. lulz. I can't look at a screen while on opiates and a few months without being attached to a computer helped me realize how worthless it was.

So much better than being stuck on a computer all the time.

Haha but if it comes down to it, stay addicted to the internet and leave the opiates alone

I have to play Devil's Advocate here and notice that you are talking about substituting information addiction with sex, violence, and image addiction.  All you're basically doing is becoming more socially acceptable in your addictions.

If the internet is keeping you from doing X things you need to do it's a problem. But for most people it is a useful tool that benefits the person =)

I am an internet addict. You need to just admit it. I spend all the time on the internet.
