Apparently there was some trouble with the instant play option.
It wasn't even in fine print or anything, just in the main body of the email, "The credit will be 3% of our $7.99 a month plan that lets our members instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies."
Is this something their lawyers came up with to prevent lawsuits for whatever technical difficulties they were having, or does this have some kind of beneficial psychological effect on people?

I've had them do that for me a few times. Every once and a while your shit won't play and they'll send you that email.

I think it definitely has a psychological effect. Everyone likes a company that takes responsibility for their short-comings. Especially when it happens nearly instantly, like it does with Netflix. It's a really smart move on Netflix's part, at least IMO. Customer service is key. These guys are using technology right, emphasizing customer service and gaining a super strong base. I don't think someone like Direct TV really stands a chance personally. I wish I had bought stock back when I first thought it was going to take over.

My car insurance company once sent me an "unused premium" refund check for 3 cents and they mailed it with 36 cents worth of postage.

I suppose it can give a feeling that they are working in good faith to correct their mistakes. That 24 cents puts them a hair over the line of good customer service, but their motivation to do it could put them strongly over the line.

i doubt it, anything about that would be in the contract/disclaimer you agreed to when signing up for netflix. However, if it has been determined that the technical difficulty was worth 23 cents of your bill, then you have no legal recourse since they paid you for what it's worth and that's all you can get in civil court.
