i'm really inspired to learn to surf. for the next 5 months i'm living right on the beach and want to dive into it.
so my friend who's leaving town wants to sell his board to me, but i'm not sure if that board is right for me. it's very light, which i'm assuming is good. i'm concerned about size though, that it's too small for me. i'm 5 foot 7, and weigh 135lbs. the board, i'm not sure how tall, he said it's 6 foot 1, but it seems taller, but i don't think more than 1 foot taller than me. is that too small, or could it do?
(he's also selling it for about $140... is that a good deal?)
i've love to hear about other tips too, but for now, i'm just trying to decide if i should go for it, as he's leaving town soon and wants to sell it possibly today.

What you need is a long board. Probably 7 to 8 feet. You would have one hell of a hard time learning on a board that short. Long boards are much more forgiving and a lot easier to drop into waves with for a beginner. And $140 for a good board isn't going to happen. Unless you have overhead waves everyday where your going, id go with the longest board you can find. Iv surfed for years and I still love my 9 footer .

Well I wanted to say something and could not contribute
truthfully though, I don't see many surfing posts!
That's kind of crazy because I know people surf and we have people from all over at the Shroomery, so I figured I would see more of these folks.
Perhaps it's due to a strange unknown factor, like "Surfers spend less time on the internet," or some such thing.
Besides Senor_Doobie, I didn't see you contribute anything

Perhaps it's because Shroomerites like to do things in an unconventional way, even unconventional things, like surfing!
So yes, perhaps the majority of most Shroomerites are not surfing, but are doing some kind of other wave riding technique, like boogie bording.

Im gonna learn this year too.. but ive snowboarded since i was 15 and im 28 and Im told board control is alot like boarding in deep powder. Anyways im starting out on a fish or a might get one of those liquid shredder pro shortboards. There softer and can take abuse so it wont get smoked when i eat shit. which Im sure will happen a few times. If youve never rode a snowboard or skateboard and your learning curves low. Ide definetely get a softie longboard. Liquid shredders are good. And maybe take a surfing class if you have em up in the frisco area unless you got a buddy who will teach ya. Hope this helps.

if you are 5'7 and 135, a 6'1 board would be plenty for you. It all depends how thick it is, you dont want a potato chip because you would break that thing pretty quick especially since you have never surfed before and you are bound to nose dive in shallow water eventually. But the shorter the board, the harder it is to learn on. I am 5'10 and 165#, and my largest board is a 10 foot single fin, and my shortest is a 5'7 twin fin, but the board can be short, it is kind of more important how thick it is and if it will float you. At 6'1, and you weighing 135, it will float you regardless of how thick it is. The price all depends what kind of board it is and the shape of it. I am an avid surfer with a very large quiver, and i would decide before buying a board, what is your style. Do you skateboard and if so, are you an aggressive skate boarder or a laidback skate boarder?
Though 5 months is a long time to learn to do something, it isnt that long with surfing, unless you live in a place that has the perfect break year around, i am an east coaster, so that is not the case for me.

everybody seems to highly recommend longboards for beginners... 6'1 will be plenty for me despite this?

yes, you can learn on a shortboard, but dont get discouraged, i started on a 5'9 shortboard from the early 80's, but i was 12 at the time. Go for the shortboard, just dont get discouraged, the 6'1 will be plenty for you

I'm a surfer on the Shroomery. Yes, you should go for a longer board than that. Try getting a 7 to 7 and a half foot funboard, it will be more versatile than a 6 foot 1 short board. You can use it on big and small waves. I learned on a 6' 3" gun and it was hard as fuck.
Yes, most surfers don't spend their time on internet forums, they spend their time doing active things like skating and surfing. I'm not a really big surfer, but my brother is. He and his friends spend all of their time road tripping to places to surf, rock-climb, mountain bike, etc. It's cool, one of them is a mycologist so they never bring psychedelics. Instead, they just hunt for mushrooms on the hike to their surf spots.
Boogie boarding is gay as fuck. I hate all the sponger fucks who get in our waves. Not that the waves belong to us, but there is a certain etiquette to surfing and spongers always seem to be completely ignorant of that etiquette. Don't be a sponger, please.
