My friend identified this as Mitrula elegans, a species usually found in standing water.

That is one cool looking fungus. Didn't find a whole lot on it from the internet, but I learned a bit more about fungi in general. I wonder if there would be any benefit from attempted culture and research.

MarchMadness, why did you delete your post?  Now anyone that was interested in seeing what Mitrula elegans looks like will not be able to see what it is in the thread.  Maybe you do not understand the concept of an online forum- it is for discussion and learning.  What if I was wrong on the ID?  Now no one can dispute the ID or provide a new opinion on what it might have been.  I am not going to help identify your mushrooms in the future if you just delete the original post afterward.

Should we put a disclaimer in the ID request format informing/asking people not to do this?

That is actually M. elegans also, it is the common Mitrula species in the US.  M. paludosa is a European species which probably does not occur in the US.

By the way, nice photo!

I’m not to sure about that C.C. I matched them up from a pic. in a North American field guide.

A lot of North American field guides are outdated or just wrong!!  Publishers are not usually interested in fixing mistakes, especially taxonomic ones, so don't believe everything you read!

Furthermore, if you were writing a field guide and some of the mushrooms which are well known in the area do not have a proper name, BUT their closest match in Europe does have a name, and that is the name that everyone uses locally for an actually different mushroom, but you know damn well based on comparing the two through morphology and sequencing that the one you are writing about is NOT the same and has no name...  What would you do?
For instance, what we call Boletus appendiculatus and B. regius (two species of "Butter Boletes") in California are definitely different from the real B. appendiculatus and B. regius in Europe, so our two species are well known and often eaten, but they are undescribed- they do not have a name.

In the case of this thread, we are lucky since the North American counterpart has been described as Mitrula elegans, and so we are not stuck with having to use the European name, M. paludosa, or no name at all.
