Pop Addiction

Ok.....so i found out not long ago that i have adult on-set of diabetes(Type 2) and am wanting to cut out all sugars to help increase my chance of reversing the disease, but i seem to have an addiction to pop that i didn't realize existed until recently.. I can easily drink a 2 liter or a 12 pack of pop in a day,Sometimes alot more. I feel like an idiot ,having caused my body harm without realizing it,but am now trying to change. Quiting pop seems to be even harder than when i quit cigarettes. I try to drink water and it only seems to dry my throat out, I thought at first it was cause i was dehydrated and my body couldn't get enough, but now it seems like maybe i am so used to the syrup in the pop, water won't help. IDK really ,But i badly need to kick the habit. I am mainly searching for a substitute for pop that doesn't have a horrible diet taste,or a way to curb my sugar/pop cravings. So if anyone has any advice of any kind i would appreciate it.
--------------------
Yea...when someone talks shit to me for an hour and uses alot of profanity i tend to give them 0 stars for it...but i guess you think that has no bearing on this situation.Thank you for NOT giving me the same rights everyone else has in the voting system, but i honestly could'nt care less.FUCK YOU ALL!!!!!

wtf a 12 pack how is that possible
I used to go through about half a two liter every day. I switched to these things:

I drink 1 per day. I feel much healthier, and I've lost a bit of weight too... not that I was particularly fat before
If I want to drink something carbonated, I mix the following:

Its delicious, and healthy. fresca has zero calories

Don't give up -that stuff is really bad for you in many ways, and it's certainly not going to help your diabetes. Also, try to lose some weight and exercise more. Recent studies have shown that this can reverse the symptoms of diabetes in many cases. Good luck!

drink this for your carbonation craving. i know, sometimes you've gotta have that crisp feeling you get from pop. i haven't had it for a year at least, this stuff hits the spot.
and it mixes really well with gin too....

be careful about the diet pops too though...that aspartame is nasty too, and at 24 a day you're not really making a healthier choice...
go for the unsweetened stuff. all that sugar and syrup is what got you in trouble in the first place. gotta get rid of it.

la croix isn't sweetened at all. it's just carbonated spring water with some flavoring.
i agree, "sugar free" is just as bad when it really means "artificially sweetened"

It is if you have Type 2 diabetes. Drink vitamin water instead, I choose that over soda any day. I a former Coke addict myself(Coca Cola ) and I understand the dark place your in.
Soda addiction is a very dangerous disease.

It's not that hard dude. I grew up drinking practically nothing but soda because it was all I drank. After I realized how disgusting it was I just quit. I maybe have 1-2 a week now at most. Humans need WATER to survive, not carbonated water with high fructose corn syrup and other types of sugars.

That shit isn't good for you either. Aspartame was originally developed as a poison. Not that the relationship between animal poison and toxicity between humans is necessarily correlated, but I'm not drinking that shit.

Aspartame (APM; /ˈæspərteɪm/ or /əˈspɑrteɪm/) is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages. In the European Union, it is codified as E951. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first sold under the brand name NutraSweet; since 2009 it also has been sold under the brand name AminoSweet. It was first synthesized in 1965 and the patent expired in 1992.
The safety of aspartame has been the subject of several political and medical controversies, Congressional hearings and internet hoaxes since its initial approval for use in food products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. A 2007 medical review on the subject concluded that "the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener".[3] However, because its breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/coDefinatly something i am not interested in consuming that!]

Soda actually changes the way your body hydrates people who drink a lot of soda are never thirsty, but people who only drink water are always thirsty. I used to drink a ton of soda as well. now that i drink water i cant stand the stuff ill have the occasional sprite but now when i drink pop it just tastes like poison for my body. I also lost like 15 just from stopping drinking soda. Soda is really terrible your body is not supposed to drink that crap.

If you have type 2 diabetes, you have more to gain from avoiding sugars and using artificial sweeteners than you can lose to the negative effects of those sweeteners.
Natural sugars are still sugars. Just because something's natural doesn't mean it's safe.

1 cup of unsweetened cranberry juice has more sugar in it than 1 cup of Pepsi.
My grandpa's been diabetic for years, and when he wants to drink juice, he can only drink about 6 ounces at a time.

In UT, the Mormons aren't allowed to drink coffee ( ) so they drink Mountain Dew for their caffeine fix.
But for some reason, they think that any dark, effervescent beverage is a coke.
I grew up here, too, but there are sodas (usually some sort of juice and soda water or something imitating juice and soda water), colas (Pepsi, Coke, RC), root beer, cream soda, and ginger ale...it's like saying all mildly alcoholic beverages are beer.

Addicted to pop? Maybe caffeine but you can't really be addicted to pop. I would suggest drinking green tea instead, with REAL sugar if you need a "fix". Corn syrup and aspartame are no bueno.
Also when you drink so much pop it gives the illusion of you being hydrated (caffeine hides the symptoms of dehydration). I would recommend having some discipline and when you feel like a soda, go for a glass of water instead.

First of all...any activity that offers a quick and satisfying reward can become an addiction, be it heroin, gambling, shopping, or food.
Second, sugar is sugar. Doesn't matter where it came from, large quantities of it are bad for your health.

Sure anything can be an addiction, but "addiction to pop" should be easy enough to overcome with a little discipline. You'd think a diabetes diagnosis might shed light on things a little.
The difference between sugar and aspartame is that sugar doesn't give you cancer. And for a diabetic, if he is going to have any sugar at all, it is better to have cane sugar than high fructose corn syrup, which was probably the cause of his diabetes in the first place.

Nelson4207 said: Ok.....so i found out not long ago that i have adult on-set of diabetes(Type 2) and am wanting to cut out all sugars to help increase my chance of reversing the disease, but i seem to have an addiction to pop that i didn't realize existed until recently..
Here's the best solution I have found:
1) Cut the pop cold turkey 2) Start drinking 5-hour energy (6-hour is good too) about 3-4 times daily 3) After a few weeks of this start weening yourself off to coffee 4) Once you've gotten yourself down to about 2 pots a day then you're ready 5) Now you can drink as much pop as you want without having the craving to drink anymore
I tried this myself and I can stand by how effective the method is!
Good Luck

Damn, that's a LOT of soda every day. ughh makes me shudder thinking about it! Water is the greatest thing on planet earth. The most satisfying thirst quencher ever, and there's nothing in it...it's water. No sugar or carbs or any of that shit.
Just try and gradually switch over to water. Whenever you feel thirsty just drink a glass of water. I bet you'll cut down on your soda intake...unless you're addicted to the caffeine which could be a possibility... In which case, drink coffee
seriously, get off the soda, man! GET OFF THE SODA, MAN!!

I don't need a caffine fix....i drink mostly caffine free pop.....like root beer and strawberry. It's just a habit to grab a pop/SODA! instead of water, and the syrup seems to tide me over better than water does,as the syrup puts a layer of film in my throat that makes me feel hydrated....idk.

LOL dude you come on an internet forum stating that you just got diagnosed with type two diabetes. You then state you drink a lot of pop. You then ask US for advice on how to stop. Sorry but I find the whole post rather . It's really simple dude, you don't need advice on how to quit drinking pop, the solution is quite obvious, you just need to enact it.

The body is a weird machine. The reason you feel thirsty when you only drink water is the fact that you are actually hydrated. It's when you don't feel thirsty that you are actually dehydrated.
So if you take down a gallon of water a day, you'll have the thirst sensation, but your body is actually happy.
Don't know why. Google it.

Also the hunger sensation can be triggered by dehydration. Non-water drinkers are forced to extract this vital liquid from the food they eat, and the body has learned this. So if your belly starts rumbling, just chug a glass of ice cold water.

I don't think this is true... I usually drink just water, probably like 6-8 glasses a day, and most of the time I never feel thirsty. It's more of a 'satisfied' type of feeling. I only feel thirsty when I actually need water...
OP - drink juice, or water. but water is better. maybe have a soda every few days, that's what I do...cause the bad stuff isn't THAT unhealthy if it's only every once in a while.

Did you do it for the caffine addiction? Cause i only drink pop,i guess for the taste idk.(Caffine free pop drinker) Plus not saying your wrong but, replacing pop with energy drinks doesn't seem like a wise move,And 3-4 6 hr energy's in a day.WTF...4,6hr energy's equal 24hrs......when do you sleep? And i hear more than 2 a day can be very harmful for your body. Not bashing your method, just wondering. And thanx for the constructive input.

My dad is a type 2 diabetic and you just made me realize... I have never.... EVER seen that man drink a sip of water in my entire life.
I drank soda growing up then got all into fitness and quit. From the time I was 14 till today(sometimes) I've worked at a catering company and my main job is serving soda so I was always temped but I started really noticing, the little kids who only drank water were in good shape while the little kids who came up to me 6+ times in the night for soda were overweight. Seeing that was motivation for me to stop.

That's true.....and i am motivated to change. It's just is not easy...I can say "It should be easy to drink from a volcano" but that don't make it true,ya know? It just ain't that easy when you been doing it so long. And I'm not trying to make excuses, just stating. I never knew the toll it would take or that it was even a problem till i was smacked in the face by diabetes. I appreciate everyones advice.

just don't have it in your house. I know what it's like to kick a habit and it's hard, I constantly had cookies and candy in my house growing up and when I moved out decided I wasn't gonna have that shit in my house so I wouldn't eat it.
I haven't eaten a piece of candy in over 3 years and I still have cravings and it's hilarious when a friend comes over and asks me for a snack and all I have to offer is different types of nuts and fruit

ok this just boggles my mind. you never once looked at the nutrition facts on the can to see what was in it? In one can of coke there's 39g of sugar...you didn't think that was bad for you? then you're drinking 12 a day? do the math, and that's a shitload of sugar.

Also, I'm never thirsty but I'll warn you, You're going to piss like crazy, I do but my piss is clear. When you get thirsty it means you're dehydrating, just keep drinking water even when you aren't thirsty because you're keeping hydrated this way.
Plus, you'll probably lose some weight because you arent as hungry neither.
