there's nothing wrong with eating meat but inhumane animal treatment is straight fucked. Also inhumane killing. I've seen that video before and it makes me nauseous.

The problem is, it takes a person without much of a soul to kill all those animals so we can eat, so to me the abuse isn't that shocking.
My dad's pretty fucked up, but he got a job cleaning floors at a slaughterhouse when he was a teenager and quit after 3 days because he couldn't take it.
And all he was doing was cleaning up the mess.
If there's one industry that really needs a mechanical overhaul, it's DEFINITELY the meat industry. It'd be really tough to do, but if robots could handle the killing behind closed doors, it'd probably keep us from encouraging the psychopaths in our society.
Also, as fucked up as this video is...it made me hungry

We don't need fucking robots to kill animals, we just need our animals to not die by going through an industrial size paper shredder. Not a hard concept to me. If it's instant/painless, I'm all for it.

Yeah, I'm a carnivore by nature. When I see a tiger or a shark moving in on its prey in nature documentaries it actually stimulates my appetite. Eating things that have been killed is a core part of how I identify myself as an animal.
That said, industrial meat production is totally fucked. Not only is it nauseatingly cruel and inhuman but it makes for shitty meat. Happy animals who roam free and eat natural diets always taste the best. We also wouldn't have problems with crazy-ass mad-cow diseases if we weren't so cheap as to feed our meat stock on itself.
I want to kill my own meat someday. My friend told me that hunting with a rifle is really lame, it's basically just a matter of sitting around and waiting for something to come nearby. I kind of want to get good at archery and hunt for real.

Primal shit. I'd be down for something like that too. Seems like it would actually work really well if you had a background in hunting, though. According to Terence McKenna, humans originally used mushrooms to improve their night-vision for hunting, so the idea is not unprecedented.

Well, no matter what methods we come up with, humans just don't have the capacity to do ANYTHING quickly, efficiently, and effectively at the same rates machines do, let alone something like killing animals.
And, as I mentioned before, it takes a really soulless person to work at a slaughterhouse. At least machines don't have souls to begin with.
I bet we could even make robotic shepherds to keep track of the animals and let them roam free, yet not wander off.
Although, I support artificially grown meat (as in made via cloning or similar techniques) as a way to get away from the horrors of the current meat industry.

I agree that we should pursue the idea of meat grown in vats. We could make it truly perfect meat that way, too. And they'd have all flavors: beef, veal, pork, poultry, etc.
Even so, I don't know if I'd go in for it if I see it come to fruition in my lifetime. It seems unnatural to me. I guess I'm just conservative.

I disagree; you don't have to be a soulless person to be a doctor/paramedic/firefighter, do you?
But yes killing an animal is tough, that's why veterinarians have one of the highest suicide risks as far as professions go.

No, dentists have the abnormally high suicide rates.
And being a doctor or the like requires someone with a HUGE heart because you're dealing with other people's problems all day.
I don't understand how you can compare a slaughterhouse worker to an emergency services worker. They're nothing alike, except that they're both human.

I guess it's the fact that they both work with death on a daily basis, but a slaughterhouse operator does seem like he would be on the other side of the equation than an EMT.

Dentists and veterinarians both have high suicide rates. I said "one of", not "the highest". How are they nothing alike? I was mostly referring to witnessing death consistently throughout your profession.

I feel that the disconnect we have from our own food cycle.. the very stuff the sustains us, and probably does a lot more to our psyche than we imagine, has probably caused all sorts of problems - physically and psychologically.
I can't help but feel, that if someone wants to eat meat, which they have every right to do so, they should know where it's come from. Once upon a time, it was an unescapable fact - even if you weren't the hunter / killer yourself, you probably had to know the animal, see it in a much more... visual and animally way than a plastic wrapped lump of beef-mince at the store.... and it's likely you had to learn at least something of the process of keeping / killing the animal.
To me, it's a basic respect thing. Another creature's life is gone so that yours may go on. So, pay your respects.
I almost feel like primary schools should have to visit abbattoirs for excursions... ha.
And, I have several times had very overwhelming feelings when tripping while camping to either hunt (kangaroos, usually), or admire. Or both. I don't understand why we can't both love something, and enjoy it for dinner?

there is literally not a hunger pang strong enough to provoke me to eat some dead animal. i am simply amazed that it's common practice to eat dead bodies and enjoy it. i just get all kinds of creepy weird feelings just thinking about it.
for me it's beyond a choice that i make, i just cant do it

Yeah, I agree with this. Just because plants are so different from humans people experience less guilt about killing them and eating them.
The only organisms that subsist on non-living food are archaea, one of the most primitive forms of life on earth. They don't even have DNA and they suck on sulfur vents.

Ok, so I'm not totally up on my biology, thanks for correcting me - archaea DO have DNA, albeit only one chromosome. They do remain some of the most primitive life on earth, however, and do not eat living things to survive. I was just pointing out the correlation.

Quoting anything as the ultimate argument ender is fallacious.
I quoted it because it seemed fitting.
Anyway, having a genuine repulsion about eating meat is a valid reason not to eat it. If you don't want something else to suffer so you can live, you can always stop eating completely and hope we perfect in vitro food before you starve to death.
