Reishi on Lowes Sawdust?
    #14172076 - 03/23/11 07:10 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Ive had a hard time locating any hardwood fuel pellets because i live in a hot part of the country and wood burning stoves arent really that popular.

I finally was able to score some sawdust from Lowes but I dont know if it will work.

The guy said that it was a combo of hardwood, softwood, and treated wood.

I did some searching and found that wood treated with arsenic was bad news but im not sure about the chemicals that are on Lowes website:

ACQ - Alkaline Copper Quat
SBX - Sodium Borate

Im going to do some more wood searching tomorrow but was wondering if I can get away with this sawdust, a bit of verm to fluff it up a bit, gypsum and possibly bran or brf

im itchin for some reishi

I'm not sure I'd do that unless the mushrooms are purely for pleasure not consumption. Have one analyzed to make sure it isn't trans locating not trans locating those chemicals from the treated wood.

Talk to a tree trimming service and get a bunch of untreated chips/mulch.

Treated wood is nasty stuff.  I would search out another source.

Well things don't always look as they are and things can be misread and mistaken for what they realy are so don't read too much into what I say since I might be mistaken myself. And remember I rarely ever give a definate answer.

If you are in the USA the treated wood no longer contains arsenic but does contain antifungals they stopped using it a few years ago.
Use paper and cardboard instead of wood if you are growing Reishi.

Check lumber yards, most just rip trees into planks and boards and ship them off, treated usually isn't done at those locations and some lumber yards do primarily hardwoods. I found a local supplier about 5 minutes from my house that does only hardwood and thier primary product it Hardwood Flooring, so they do ALOT of cutting and give all the sawdust away for free, and thing not removed at the end of the day gets swept up and either burned or taken home by employees, so they are glad to be rid of it.

Good advice!  This post is over 3 years old though so they've probably sorted it out by now
