Put the weight on, always, even if you cook food with it... otherwise pressure will be released

NO... i also have a presto.. i just made a vid ill post someday.. what I DO is let the thing get to a real good boil with the lid off then put the lid on and put the weight on once it starts really shooting steam out like 10" or so outta the steam pipe.. it takes WAY longer for the lid to lock if you put it on right away.. with my method youll be on and rockin' in like 10-15 min as opposed to 20 or more.. ive timed it..

I would suggest reading your manual for the safe operation instructions for your particular PC.
If you do not have the manual you might be able to find it online.

i have it right here actually... i quote "the pressure regulator is placed on the vent pipe following the 10 minute exhaust period"

(page 16 step 7) "exhaust air from canner and jars by adjusting heat to a relatively high setting to obtain a free flow of steam from the vent pipe.... allow steam to flow for 10 minutes"... step 9 "just tells how to adjust regulator"
step 9 "place reg on vent pipe and adjust to a relatively high setting untill reg begins to rock"
then adjust to the heat setting so it just gently rocks like "pish pish pish" i dont like the reg to hit the pipe.. try and remember how much water you used and the heat setting so you can just put it there on the correct heat once it starts rocking and walk away next time..
also.. if you boil it without the lid it boils faster.. and make sure to wash it before ya use it.. or everythings gonna have a weird oily smell.. good luck mayne!!

The water will heat up faster with a lid on. I set the lid on and don't lock it down until it gets boiling and then lock the lid and vent steam for about 3-5 min, then put the weight on. The laws of physics/thermodynamics say that the heat released without a lid on a pot will cause it to take longer to boil than with a lid.
I've had my PC since 1990 and have used it hundreds of times canning meat/seafood/soup/etc. I used to do the 10 min exhaust thing but found that it's just wasting energy to do so. 3 min and I'm good.

same here i dont exhaust for 10 min either.. i let it boil.. put the lid on and when i see steam comin out like 10" or so i apply the weight.. you should always let the air escape before putting the weight on.. the thing locks almost instantly or within 30 sec or so...

You should try my method of just sitting the lid on top without locking it and then the lid heats up slowly avoiding any quick temp changes of the gauge/release valve/blow off rubber/sealing ring etc. I love my Presto (it was a Christmas gift ).

1) let your water come to a rolling boil 2) place your jars inside making sure they are not touching the water in the bottom (burned substrate) 3) place the lid on the PC, if its a screw on weight, unscrew it a tiny bit so its stuck open on the post allowing full venting and secure the lid. (this is the best time to check around the lid, look for dripping water or a bubbling sound, make sure your gasket is fully sealing the lid to the pot) 4) wait for a nice steady stream of steam to come out 5) drop the weight down onto the stem 6) give it a little time to build pressure. 7) tap the weight and listen/look for steam, would remind you of a train whistle or something 8) wait for the weight to fully lift up 9) turn down the heat till the weight "jiggles", not closing but not fully open. stomp on the ground near your stove and if it goes *tst tst tst* like a jiggling sound, its gold. 10) start your time now.
2 tips: make sure to lube your gasket with a food safe oil like olive or canola. this increases the life of the gasket, preventing it from drying out and ensuring a nice seal.
if youre having trouble getting your gasket to fit the lid properly, run it under cold water. it shrinks, put it in the lid, secure the lid.

The Presto has a pressure gauge for a reason. I use it all the time! I guess I'm just a little scientific about it.

not all prestos have the pressure gauge. some just have weights that you can take apart for 5, 10 or 15 psi.

I believe the one he has has a gauge (23 Qt.). I think that the AA PC's have different weights for different pressures. I don't know of any Presto units set up like that but I could be wrong (of course).

That's why I'm here. To learn. I learn something new every day.
I guess It's about time to get my gauge calibrated as it is 21 years old. I wouldn't need to do that with the different weight method.

The pc locked in about 15minutes, i then put the weight on it but its been about 5minutes and the gauge hasnt moved from zero. is that normal?

it will.. put the weight on.. then it locks.. its faster that way.. just wait.. turn up the heat to full blast till it starts rockin.. thats what i do..
