[Strange growth] What is this?

Been waiting for these cakes to pin for almost two weeks now, and finally got something. I have no clue what this is, I would assume this is a contaminant, but I'll let the experts decide.

Looks like a contaminant to me, but I have never seen anything like that. Does it smell strange? I don't see any bruising within the myc around the area, which is strange. You have been fruiting for 2 weeks and no pin at all?

I don't notice any smell. I've been waiting for awhile because I think I birthed too early. I've been misting, and fanning 3-5 times daily. This showed up yesterday, and I was really hoping it was a pin, but looks more like something bad. ;(

Yeah, this has come to mind. That is a really bizarre mutation. So it came up in the past 24 hours? If it has been two weeks, you should be seeing pins by now.

I'm about to just dump all these cakes. I don't know what I did wrong, but none of these cakes are producing any pins. I see what appears to be knotting, but no pins are forming on any of them. Then this shows up, and I'm at my wits end!
I'm thinking about just trying WBS, and a casing for my next project - and just tossing these.

I wouldn't toss them just yet. You said yourself you thought some knotting was coming in and that you birthed them too soon. Given that, 2 weeks isn't unreasonable I suppose. Birthing early tends to contribute to mutants IME.
Go ahead and start some WBS while waiting for these. It will take about 2 weeks before you WBS will be ready to use assuming it colonizes fully.

Don't toss them. Give them a few more days, then dunk again for 24 hours. Let them go another week, if nothing. Then toss.
WBS jars will take 3-5 weeks for full colonization using MS depending on temps & strain

Can I dunk again, even with knotting? Or will that cause bruising?

They don't look super dry, so I would just let them go for another week or so. I had some Costa Ricans that took a good 2 weeks + to fruit. Patience.

Bruising doesn't hurt anything. It's the only way those puppies may produce fruits. It's, basically the last ditch effort to produce some fruits from your cakes.

Maybe. But I thought that Mycogone perniciosa (wet bubble) was only associated with mushroom fruit bodies, not with the mycellium itself? I could be mistaken...

So ... I decided to toss this cake, and upon doing so, I felt like exploring the contents. This is what I found:

Does this look like the contents of a healthy, colonized, brf cake? I can take more pictures if this isn't good enough. And if it does, is it still possibly usable in some form?
