Live Free or Die
    #1416896 - 03/29/03 01:41 PM (21 years, 4 days ago)

From Markos: ...but I really like New Hampshire's license plate motto the best: 'Live Free or Die.'

I found it HIGHLY ironic that a number of years ago, a New Hampshire man taped over this slogan on the license plate of his care as he did NOT believe in the extreme of death in lieu of freedom. Naturally, he was fined and jailed for expressing his point of view. More appropriately, they should have hanged him according to the slogan.

Very funny Swami. Did you just concoct that? Please tell me that you're not reducing this potentially metaphysically high ideal to below the level of a DMV motto?

I do not have the reference as this was over 10 years ago, but it is a true story. I am not "trying to do" anything except expose an irony.

i dont see how people CANT see that i mean come one?! is it that hard to see how people drone about their lives? living on time clock? is THAT freedom? freedom to have a credit card when your 18? people use that as a definition for growing of age. it astounds me people cant see it.

You dont have to die though to have your freedom, keep your "freedom" quiet, and make some mischief so that maybe one day we can all live free to stretch and breathe. sit back and accept it and be lazy, stick back in the drugs, the couch, the sex, the rock and roll, be comfortable in slavery, and you will lose your freedom.

freedom to live, stand up, stand out, speak out, expand?

or freedom live or in this case DIE in the acceptance of slavery?

News Link

"George Maynard, a Jehovah's Witness, happened to think that life was more precious than freedom, and he found his state's slogan repugnant to his beliefs. In protest, he cut the words "or Die" off his plate, and taped over the words "Live Free." Claiming that he had violated a statute that made it a misdemeanor to obscure the motto, the state took Maynard to court. In 1977, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the state could not force Maynard to carry the "Live Free or Die" slogan because doing so would violate his First Amendment rights. The court felt that the slogan was an ideological message, not a neutral slogan, and that New Hampshire was overstepping its bounds by forcing Maynard to display it on his private property."

Big Brother's slogan "Freedom is Slavery" is perfectly consistant with New Hampshire's slogan "Live Free or Die." I don't see the problem.  :smirk:

Now only do I find what you said ironic, that they charged this guy for excorsizing his First Amendement rights, but more so that he did this in the first place. He not only cut out "or Die", but taped over the "Live Free." A JW living in another country might be persicuted for their beliefs, he should be happy to live in a free country where one can worship whatever and whoever they want as a religion. What gets me most is that "he found his state's slogan repugnant to his beliefs". Does this mean that he is willing to change his beliefs if faced with possible death for believing what he believes? Sounds like a martyr to me.  :smirk:

This is ironic on so many levels it boggles my mind.

Oh, so it was a "Christian" moron. Now it all makes perfect sense.

And yes, I see many levels of irony as well.

Cheers,

I think 100% should. Noone lives free, some however live closer to freedom than most, but in the end we are all inhibated. If we all kill ourselves now, there would never be a day when we are all free.

Much of this depends on how you define freedom.

I am as free as any man, and freer than most.

I define freedom differently- yes. This is why I started with 'I think', indicating my opinion.

What's your secret Swami? You're the only guy here who can make a thread about something that has nothing to do with Spirituality or Philosphy and your thread stays.

Not a flame, just a question.

It's no secret Swami pays me.

Got prints?

Seriously, this thread is about a political philosophy and as such is very much suited for this forum.

Cheers,

ps pm me back with the correct text for the pic and I'll enter it.  I will be re-opening the thread tomorrow.

It is called "charisma" and is indicative of a healthy glowing aura based on years of fifth chakra meditation and crystal balancing.
