Lookin good Toni, some are just bad give it a good spanking and send it outside. I still haven't spawned to bulk yet but the grain looks good and I have expanded it so im ready when I get some time. I am working on a sulfur shelf clone right now. When I'm sure it is clean I will send you a wedge. Trout

That's it. This is the second big cluster I have found and this time I decided to clone it. Got a gallon of good fruit that was wonderful cooked into a cream sauce for pasta, and sauteed with eggs. I haven't even thought about how to grow it yet but I thought I might as well have some in my collection. Check my user galery for a good pick of the first tree covered in fruit. It was a dead oak about 3' in diamater covered half way around for 10'. This one was on oak(living) as well.

Just so I'm clear on this last post, this spawn ratio is specific to conifers, yes?
In reading other posts on shiitake, I've seen spawn ratios of 1:20 using rye berries.
The principle I've read is that shiitake may mutate with high levels of spawn (or high levels of supplement). I know that some softwoods have properties that are resistant to mushrooms, and I wonder if that has something to do with the different spawn ratio here.
cheers from a noob

For supplementation, each 100 lbs of sawdust(moistened) gets 2 cups gypsum and 4 cups oat or rice bran. This is the amount for 20 five pound substrate bags. Use a complex substrate. In other words, something like 60% various sawdust types, 20% shredded bark, and 20% shredded straw will perform better than supplemented sawdust alone. RR

That spawn ratio is specific for the strain he used, every Shiitake strain behaves differently, is true that all are sensitive to spawn ratio and suplementation but some strains are more sensitive than others like S-75. Here is where each grower have to find the amount of spawn/suplementation that works best for him in his environment, substrate...
