methods of cold-shocking
    #1417024 - 03/29/03 06:02 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

if one does not have an air conditioner and the outside temperature isn't hot enough to cause a big enough drop in temperature, are there any other ways to cold shock a tray to initiate pinning? if adding light and reducing CO2 and humidity aren't enough to do the trick, how might one accomplish this? i've read that putting the tray in the refrigerator would help, but there are concerns about the bacertia content inside of the refrigerator. would putting the original lid on the tray and wrapping it in something like saran wrap or tin foil provide enough protection, or should the refrigerator be avoided altogether? would a cooler or similar container filled with ice be A better alternative?

is cold-shocking recomended? would it be better just to increase the other factors (co2, humidity, light) and just do what can be done with the temperature without using the fridge? using the refrigetator isnt' a problem (and techincally pinning isn't either yet - just looking ahead so as to be prepared) but fridges Arent typically too clean...especially dorm-room fridges. what i am asking about is a casing in tupperware, that is currently in a larger tupperware container to protect it from the air. the larger tupperware wouldn't fit in the fridge, so the case would have to be removed. is there any way i could protect the tray from bacteria while it's in the fridge? thAnks for the reply

All you need is a 10 degree temp drop, but more is Okay if you don't freeze them.

Just keep them in sealed containers to keep out contams. If it's a casing, throw it in clean tupperware and shock, if it's pf cakes, what my personal preference is is to throw the cakes in a large slide-lock ziplock bag, fill with water, close, and leave in the fridge overnight.

Make sure that it is in a SEALED airtight container, that's all. Keep the mushrooms in, and the contams out.
