is mycelium supposed to grow only ontop of agar?

Yes, and you would only want it to grow on top.  This makes it easier to separate the healthy culture from any undesirables.  Think of it as the game operation where all the problem spots are visible and all it takes is some careful extraction.  If you where to try to do the same with any "3d" media like rye it would be like brain surgery to remove a tumor, you can spend hour poking trough it and not remove all of it.

so is it ok to plant some non-colonized agar into the grain with the mycelium? or is it best to try to seperate the myc from the agar

You drop the mycelium-covered agar right into the grains.  Don't try to separate the mycelium from the agar.  It needs the agar there to get a good jump off into the grains.

Mycelium will grow on the surface of agar, and this can be used to advantage.  If you have bacteria on a plate, you can pour piping hot agar over the top of it, and when the mycelium climbs up through the new layer to reach the surface, shave it off and transfer to a new dish.  This is a great way to separate mushroom mycelium from bacteria.

well before i read this i already cut the agar in half so its got like half mycelium and half agar.


are you supposed to drop it in the grain and leave it or shake the jars? i didnt know so i shook 3 and left 3
