Black Belt
    #14123713 - 03/15/11 04:34 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

One becomes a black belt in martial arts when your instructor or group of instructors deem you to be one (or if you pay enough money or hang around long enough).

And they got theirs by either self-declaration or yet another arbitrary black belt.

What does this type of arbitrary certification (seen in almost every field) truly mean?

It SHOULD mean that a student has reached a level of mastery equivalent to his teachers. That the student is now a peer. In academia at least, that's what a PhD means.

What it really means in martial arts if someone gives himself a black belt, I dunno.

It's mostly a way to keep lazy students interested in the continual training required from my experience.  I never liked having belts and in my last school there was only two given.  But even that was too much imo.

At my school, Black Belt was just the start of things, you'd proven yourself qualified to be a serious student.
More like a bachelor's than a PhD. Ready to move to PhD or master's studies.

As far as self-declaration... yeah. Watch out for that.

everyone is right...in karate the old days the students were given white belts and by the time they were ready to complete their training their belts would be black from all the dirt and use cause you are never allowed to wash your belts. some do jos you can buy your rank but any good school you will have to earn it. any karate school that makes you sign up with the Japanese karate association is more then likely worth your time cause that have to fallow ruff rules set forth for the leveling of students. the higher black belts in karate are required to get their next belt from a person of higher rank and this often means traveling to japan or some where the student may test by a qualified person. i been in martial arts for almost 15 yrs anything else u wanna know just ask. and that is with anything about martial arts. hope this helps

At my dojo, your rank is indicated by how long the name of your belt color is. I was just promoted up from fuchsia.

I'm a badass caerulean now! :brucelee:

Where can you be a black belt by hanging around long enough?

Who gets their belt by self declaration?

Why are you assuming that the requirements for a black belt are arbitrary? It's like passing an exam, if you pass you move on to the next belt, if you fail, you don't. There are rules set up and criteria to be met, perhaps ultimately these criteria may be arbitrary, but what is your point? Ultimately everything is arbitrary.

Is that so? So the 9 founders of Taekwondo who were petitioned by the state to start schools because of their skills above everyone else?

You're assuming that every branch of martial arts is founded by one person and that one person just decided to do it themselves.

EDIT: Also, karate belts were introduced only in 1882, so you're missing a couple hundred years there.

We deem you, LTF, unworthy of a black belt.

How are belt rankings any more arbitrary than anything else? I submit that they aren't and that this thread is pointless as are a majority of your threads.

Gee, a strawman. How totally novel. Point out where I stated this and win big bucks.

I guess your philosophical blunders are somehow a great addition to the forum.

you didn't. I concede. To address your op, "this truly means" absolutely nothing because it's arbitrary.

Having a black belt does not mean you have master anything yet. Earning your black belt is a great achievement but it only signifys the beginning of your career in martial arts.  I have been in Tang soo do for around 7 years now and have just earned my black belt. I feel that i am just now starting to grasp the art.  It will be many years decades even before i master karate there is just so much to it really.  Not only is it about learning to fight but also its learning to use your mind as well.  The black belt is only the beginning and its exciting that i have yet so much to learn in the future.
