Question about wet spot
    #14168266 - 03/23/11 02:52 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all.  So I made  nine grain jars a few weeks ago and innoced them with some cube spores.  I have worked with grain jars -> mono tubs before, but I usually work with a friend that does the actual grain prep.  With this last batch, I did it by myself.  To prepare the jars, I rinsed five times then soaked for 12 hrs.  Next, I dumped the dirty water that the grains were soaking in, and filled it with fresh water.  Then I simmered it for about 30 minutes.  After that I laid the grains in a bunch of giant salad bowls (like the ones you see in some Greek restaurants).  Then, after about 3 hours, I loaded them into my jars.  I noticed immediately after loading them into my jars that some of the kernels on the bottom were still wet and had busted, creating a wbs mush on the bottom of several jars.  I pressure cooked and inoculated anyway.  Now it's been a while and the jars are nearing completion.  None of my jars lost to mold, however I noticed that the mycelium that ate this busted/wet grain on the bottom of the jar looks a bit different.  It is completely white but you can tell that the grains on the bottom were not as intact as the grains on the top.  I fear it may be wetspot, but from my understand, the myc would not have colonized these wet and busted grains on the bottom of the jars if it was in fact wetspot.

Now my question(s) is this:

1. Are there ever instances where people have prepared grains that have been too wet and soggy and been successful?

2. Is it true that if the jar DID have wetspot, it wouldn't be white with myc all over including the suspicious areas on the bottom of the jars?

The reason I am asking this is because I am about ready to spawn these to a monotub and don't want to spawn a bunch of contaminated grain to a bulk substrate.  I will try to post pictures of the jars in the next day or two, but if anyone has ever had a situation like mine, tell me what to do!! =)  Thanks everyone.

:scumbagsteve::trolldance:

I doubt that you have a problem for any edible species.

1. Sure. You just increase you chance for bacteria (wet spot) when your jars/bags are overly wet.

2. Not necessarily. Bacteria can definitely be an underlying problem that will go unnoticed until you give the jar a shake and find the mycelium won't recover. Same goes for spawning the jars. They may look "okay" before you break 'em up and spawn 'em, but never end up recovering because bacteria took over.

Tell-tale signs include excess metabolites, the obvious odor (sickly-sweet, rotten fruit, garbage-y smell), a "creamy" or "muddy" appearance surrounding the contaminated grain(s), and the grains will sometimes have a smooshed-against-the-glass appearance.

On that note, can you post any pics?

Yeah, I will post some high quality pictures tomorrow.  I need to get my girlfriends digital camera first, because the only camera I have is my crappy cell phone one.
