Hello All....
I have been lurking these forums for about 3 seasons now and i have finally signed up and would like to tell you our story....
It all started 3 winters ago, I moved out of home into a share house with my two best mates. It was a party house, we partied a lot and were in to all types of substances if you know what I mean. One day my friend found a mushroom in the front garden and we wondered how to tell it was active. We found out how very quickly and asked everyone we know if they went hunting but found that  most people talk a lot of shit.
We started venturing out ourselves, the first lot we were sure we had the right ones, we made a soup and we passed out. Yes, Unconscious for 24hrs. It was a Saturday night and people couldn’t wake us up. Its ok, we were lucky no bad problems from that. We tried another 3 times with no luck. Yes we ate 2 other unknown varieties of mushrooms that we ‘thought’ where active.
It was getting to the end of the 2nd winter and we were on our way home. I had spent so much time on this, so much petrol and not one sub.... THEN bang we found two perfect subs, we knew straight away it was them.

We proceeded over the hill and to quote Bliss and Esso ‘magic mushrooms littered the walkway’ we picked 2kg that day, and got high for over a month .(Including all of my friends)

Now to this year... the count so far is 1200. Sorry to anyone else if we have gone to someone else’s spot I have seen two other groups there, but very rarely. This year has been a good year so far and we have been snipping them it works wonders. This post is long enough but I have some very interesting things to say, but that’s for later.....
Respect to the seasoned hunters.

Cheers for the kudos Lord, Jonstoned and Fungus. I still look at that last pic and it make me pee my pants just a little.

Still a newbee but a little concerned that people seem to be taking so many....keep it real easy and the filth will stay away. Glad everyone is cool and shares but really how many do you need? Or have i just opened a can of worms?

Oh and BTW welcome Blue!

I've said my bit, now i'll shut up.

for every 100 you find, theres probably another 200 you walked past that day. Its a fungus, really dude quit worrying so much.

Don't pick pins and don't take any that won't make the trip home/or should be left to spread spores and yes don't take more then you need.
Are we supposed to extend the rule that your not supposed to take healthy mushrooms now as well?

With that being said, when I go hunting I don't plan for any specific numbers, I just go to my spots and take the healthiest looking subs and leave everything else.
Whether it be 10 mushrooms, 100 or 1000 I just walk through the forest and take the best ones and leave 90% of the rest and I can still come home with a few hundred and I left not just pin and oldies, but a few thousand I could have taken.

When your respectful to an area and treat the spot well theres plenty of ways you can positively impact that spot and still harvest lots and lots of fruits.

Well said Austrip. Welcome BlueFairy, but eating random mushrooms, shheesh, glad you are ya mates ended up alright.

Went for my first hunt of the season today but no luck. Was looking for a new spot a bit closer to home and habitat was perfect in eucalypt forest but conditions have been unfavourable i think. Plenty of galernia around and some other LBMs. Some little baby amanita pins too. And a very interesting inside out mushroom that was like a cup growing inside the ground rather than growing out of it. Haven't seen that before.

Happy hunting. Peace tripping.

Yes, True words there Austrip. I think the key word there was respectful. I guess if i only want 100 or so for the season and others want 1000's so be it.

well no one needs 1000's, but when you get a few hundred you really don't even notice. Like I said I don't plan or think/do anything different the days I get 50 and the days I get 500, you just come home and realize you had a good day that day. At least for me thats how it is.

I would see probably in between 1000-5000 (pins, ripe and mature) subs on the best days of the season.
and take maybe 10% of only the best ones.

When you think about that those mushrooms are just whats in my sight at the time, there has got to be many MANY thousands of subs just in that forest alone.

respectful IS the keyword, take the advice of the seasoned hunters here and follow that rule like I did when I first started and you will have plenty of gifts in return from mother nature. :mushroom2:

:peace:

Whoa.... Don't get me wrong.... but I have seen plenty of people getting the 1000 sub hauls this year, just go back 10 pages or so. Its better to get when you can, too many people go and go and go. I have been to places which have been rampaged due to this.

Awesome first post man! love it.

You have to realize though it's a dog eat dog world when it comes to mushroom picking, now days it's not a case of just getting a small ammount then coming back as too many spots are being ravaged.

As far as people over picking, you have to realize that some of these patches are not picked at all and literally will fruit thousands of fungi throughout the season and not be touched, some people stick by that idea that if it's just going to rot and die off there's no sense in leaving it. I know that's the way i see it, plus i'm growing from the pickings and collecting spores and sharing them around the community constantly creating a future for these little beauties

All of the shrooms i've picked this year have been from a couple of spots i can bet my bottom dollar would have just rotted all season long had i not have harvested it

@smokeandtoke, that's like the patch i stumbled across, 90% of them were fully matured then about 8% were rotten and the other 2% were the youngens.
I figure once they have done their little cycle then they're just waiting there to be enjoyed

Fair play to all who gave be a solid rebuttal. I would just like to think that people only took what they need. I am pretty hardcore when it come to conservation and truly believe that all species are there for a reason....not just to rot. Biodiversity man!
