Oyster buckets?
    #14165712 - 03/22/11 04:52 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Can I ust the buckets that pool chlorine comes in.  It is sterile and should wash out I think?  With several soaks and detergent rinses it should be clean but I thought I would get input?  I can get alot of these free so I want to use them to grow if safe/productive.

It'd seem so, though I'm not really sure.  I don't do this personally, but some people do diluted bleach baths of substrate instead of pasteurizing.  Bleach is essentially the same thing as pool chlorine, just a lower concentration of sodium hypochlorite.

I'm sure they would be fine. Especially if you line the bucket with a trash bag. Bleach is often used when making some substrates and produces edible mushrooms.

Chlorine just washes out with water, no need for liners or detergents, just rinse drill holes (1-1/4" 32mm works good, 1" is fine) and stuff with substrate. Buckets are a brilliant way to grow mushrooms.

Thats what I thought.  Buckets look like the way to go for oysters for sure.  So what do you do to clean them if you get a bad case of tric or some other contam?  What are the square buckets and where did you score them?  They look better(size) than the clorine buckets I can get.

In the winter i was just using a steam humidifier to get the air right. Didn't work as the weather warmed up, and i stopped concentrating on growing so much fruit to expand my spawn bag sales.

I cut the greenhouse in half and only use the top couple of shelves with half a dozen buckets now to supply myself and a couple of mates with fresh shrooms a couple times a week. I've got a coolmist type thing now that works ok.

The square buckets are from the Cheesecake Shop in Aus. They hold six or seven litres (two gallons or so)

Buckets rock because you don't need shelving if you are growing in a larger room.  If you stack them 5 high you can tilt the column slightly and roll it around quite easily if needed.  Great way to recycle!!

Maybe you do... if there are any deli's in your area give them a call and ask if they have any old pickle/sauerkraut buckets. I got about 50 for free when I did that.

BBQ restaurants go through lots of pickles which usually come to them in, you guessed it, 5 gal buckets.

1:10 is a popular measure for oysters.  I've done far less and had it work though.  But if you want to use that measure then you can do 2.5 gallons per quart jar of spawn.

That bucket setup looks awesome!

As a newbie i like transparent containers to check for contams and full colonization.  When i get more confidence i will indeed try those buckets, i´m sure i can find a couple of those free
