My general question is, that if magic mushrooms in new jersey are mostly wood lovers.. and love birch, maple, and beech. can paper birch qualify as a medium for them to grow in the wild in central jersey? my main strain i hope to hunt down and find this spring are the ovoids. so im hoping someone can answer my question because my woods are full of decaying paper birch. P.S. incase u didnt know im a newbie at hunting so i would like to know as much as possible lol

The biggest thing with Ovoids is the habitat. They are generally found in riparian habitats around rivers and creeks. They can grow from logs but most finds I've seen are growing from buried wood in the soil.
As to what type of wood they prefer, I don't think there's a special kind, they just like hardwoods.

Additionally, W11, paper birch IS "regular birch" for all intents and purposes. In these parts, it is by far the most common birch species. Further north, in the right type of sites, yellow birch can also be found. From everything I know about tree woods and lignificolous mushroom species, any differences in preference should be too minor for us to be able to gauge.

thanks man.. cause i just wanted to clarify it since it looks quite different from other birches. and ive also read that many people who have found ovoids they were growing out of woodchips of decaying birch or beech most commonly under japanese knotweed. there is plenty of paper birch logs in my neck of the woods that crush instantly when you step on them and turn into woodchip or a brownish fine powder and convienty located by a river in a floodplain with brushes located not to far away. possibley some pine trees by the brushes to.. hopefully i can find some gyms happy hunting to all you guys in a couple months

Right back at ya, W11. Yeah, birch really gets "punky" fast when it's laying on the ground. We got a ton of em in our woods too.
