long story short, been out of the laptop loop for awhile since my last one broke, had an ipad a couple months ago- sold that, now im going to get a laptop again cause it's overall more useful for me.
Was just wondering if anyone can throw me an opinion if this laptop looks legit?
seems like a good deal to me though.

never buy hp laptops, they are prone to hardware failures similar to the rrod in xbox 360's.

I can flash/jtag/repair 360's, pm for details.

Meh. Not particularly more than most other brands.

hps are way worse than any other brand. poor heat management, poor chip mounting, poor every thing. i'm not talking hdd's going bad or regular shit that breaks. hp's are notorious for having components on the mobo fail (cracked bga under smc's). i have never had anyone bring me other laptops with these kinds of problems.

I find it hard to believe that HP would do worse especially on those aspects that relate to PCB and PCBA manufacturing, as every major brand in the pc industry along with legions of other electronics brands use the same dozen or so EMS (electronics manufacturing services) companies (e.g. Solectron, Sanmina SCI, Flextronics, Foxconn). HP historically has had particularly close relationships with Celestica, to which they sold a substantial part of their EMS activities (other parts were sold off to other EMS firms). It stands to reason that they now employ a multi-sourcing strategy and use several EMS providers. This means that manufacturing problems particularly associated with HP products (and not with other brands) seem extremely unlikely. If you have credible information that suggests otherwise, then I'll be happy to refine my views.
The only thing I'm willing to believe is that some of their products show poor thermal design. Other brands have pretty bad solutions in this respect as well, and not all HP products suffer from this issue. Again, the fact that HP doesn't actually develop these products but leaves that to their EMS partners would support that view.
It seems everyone has an opinion about consumer goods quality. It also seems that very few people actually know what they're talking about, and many base their judgement on experiences with a small number of products or on experiences of others.
Btw, I have no vested interests in any of the EMS companies or in any of the consumer goods OEM's. However, I do know one or two things about the business aspects of managing technology, as that's what currently pays my bills (and has for a few years).

If anyone cares: I used an HP laptop I recieved as a gift for a bit. After a year or so it developed problems with the case's integrity: it was simply not built very sturdily. It sagged if you didn't support it evenly, though no consequance of this was observed.
The big issue was the infamous power jack issue which prevented the computer being used or the battery being charged. The connection between the AC input jack and the comnputer deteriorated and HP would not provide any help in fixing it (myself or via private shop) other than to offer rapair for several hundred dollars. (FYI, the part in question costs less than a dollar). They would not provide the replacement part, and I assume, like Dell, actively refuses to provide it or allow their manufacturer to do so: at any price.
With any laptop I would make absolutely sure you will not encounter power jack issues or that if you do it can be fixed in an acceptable manner. HP and Dell's "solution" is often to charge you $500 and up to replace the motherboard rather than replacing the sub $1.00 part. This is a notorious issue and I would be very careful you do not subject yourself to it. (far as I can tell, the "fix" is as simple as getting three wires and screws, screwing the plug to the case and wiring it to the board. Three wires and screws are apparently too expensive, so many manufacturers screw you instead)

just for the sake of thread closure, i ended up with this laptop- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i3+Processor+/+15.6%22+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Silver/1814118.p?id=1218293981088&skuId=1814118
i'd venture to say its pretty solid- good performance, screen,etc.. i enjoy it more than my last hp and have seen no problems with it thus far.

+1 for Samsung

Looks like Samsung is a fan of soldering the jack to the motherboard without substantial mechanical isolation.
Here's hoping you don't experience what I have.
