Got two bareroot LW babes!! Will have pics soon!Ferrel, GGTBod, reccomend anything not in the teks for going from bareroot to safely secure in their medium? I was gonna go for mostly diatamaceous earth, perlite, and a cup (literally) of microwave "sterilized" sifted sandy compost. I have medium/large grade perlite instead of rocks to make a barrier layer...saw some folks doing that and myco buddies seem to have no problem handing over a few sacks of coarse perlite when asked haha.:super: Also...I don't want to have to repot for a while, 4" terra cotta with bottom watering holes? Or Plastic 4" pot that I bottom water? They are just under 1.5" when full on water, about 1" right now from having been on a journey-so I thought the 4" size would be the way to go for a year or two?

When you repot, do so into a dry mix and don't water for a couple of weeks.
Plastic or terracotta.. depends on your growing environment, humidity, rainfall if outside, and so on. With your mix, plastic would most likely be ok. Grab a fistful when damp and see if it remains held together, or falls apart easily. You want it to come apart easily.
Lophs wont outgrow any pot in a hurry, but overpotting isn't always good practice with some cacti, especially slow growers, but again that will depend on your soil mix and conditions.

Im in Newcastle a bit further north, if you do use them do it gradually and on very hot days (even tho rare) remove the domes, with a dome you are raising the temps quite a bit, make sure you have plenty of ventialtion holes in the domes, i lost 2 diffusa variety to sunburn in domes as they are not as tough as willliamsii and just could not acclimatise. They definitly grow better in our cold climate under them but if they ahve been used to normal UK temps you definitely gotta get them used to the higher temps bit by bit, good luck.

What cacti you got? Load some pics up

hey GGTBod, what exactly are you using those domes for?

too much humidity may cause them to rot. just a heads up.

I live in the 55th parallel north sun is not so bright up here even on our hottest days, the domes are to intensify sunlight like a mini greenhouse, i only water from the bottom and inside the domes is very arrid (I monitored them with digital humidy/thermometer same type i use for shrooms when i first started trying out different styles of them). It is an attempt to create a more desert like Texan style environment instead on my windowsill that is level with Alaska on the globe, sort of trying to replicate the natural environment without it having to survive and hide from hippy scavanger hunts to get to maturity.

Zoom on the map i live on the red line

On my hottest day i get the inside of my domes gets up to 32 degrees celcius maximum without the domes is 28c and in winter on my coldest days they get down to -7 degrees celcius and without domes -10.

Like yourself my first thoughts when having the idea was it is no good if it increases humidy but the combination of the white stones reflecting the light rays and then the domes stopping them escaping so easily just gives me that little bit more temps.

I've been using them about 3 years now and they just look so much happier especially in the dormancy as the atmosphere was just too damp and cold without.

I may not need the domes in my new pad as it has double glazing, this shithole is like living in a wind tunnel and at the moment my cacti altho on my windowsill they are not exactly protected from any elements except rain

well that seems reasonable. i did not know exactly where you were from.

mine don't really grow at the begining of spring. its only when the sun is straight over head and its like 105f is when they grow.

but that is pretty cool setup.

:super:

I would love to be able to grow them outside big problem is i would need to live in a house with some serious air conditioning system and a limitless amount of electricity to run the fucker. My genetics are far too used to this climate, I am most comfortable at 18c - 21c (64.4f - 69.8f) any hotter than that and i am out my league like a fish on the land out of water, so then i'd be sitting there viewing my Peyotes from inside my refrigerated house.

I am only so aware of the temps around me because all over my house i have digital readouts, next to the "Grandfather Lopho" there is a constant monitor system setup with a digital min and max temp setup so i even know what it has been like when i wasnt there right now he is sitting at 12.4c (54.32f) air humidty level 88% soil completely dry as he hasnt had a drink since start of November

Over the next year with all the seeds i've been planting I am moving the whole collection under artificial lighting and i'll definitely not be needing the domes anymore after that
