Dog sniffs out opium in parcels at O’Hare March 22, 2011 - suntimes.com
Wherever smugglers hide drugs, Rambo can find them, David Murphy of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said after his drug-sniffing canine partner found three shipments of opium arriving at O’Hare Airport.
Rambo’s zero-tolerance nose recently found opium hidden in the heels of fancy women’s sandals, impregnated into the colorful cloth of women’s shawls and in the cloth of a shipment of tablecloths, according to a release from CBP.
Last week, the 65-pound Belgian Malinois alerted to a parcel containing 22 tablecloths and further inspection found a thin, black tarlike substance saturated into each cloth which field tested positive for opium.
Rambo also alerted to a shipment of 18 pairs of women’s sandals, and an x-ray showed the heels containing thick black tarlike pellets wrapped in plastic that field tested positive for opium.
The total amount of opium seized from the shipment totaled 1.7 kilograms.
On March 11, Rambo and his officer partner identified a parcel containing 10 long colorful shawls, in which the cloth contained the presence of opium. The 10 opium-saturated shawls totaled 3.1 kilograms.
“Wherever smugglers can hide it, Rambo can find it,” Murphy said.
All the packages originated in Laos and were destined for St. Paul, Minn.

Why don't people bother to vacuum seal and wipe with bleach? The dogs can be fooled.

Vacuum seal your product, wipe with bleach (as stated) and put the bags in the center of a box that is filled with coffee beans to mask the scent. A friend of a friend of a friend ships goods cross country that way.

No need for coffee, my friend. If you want to ship it discretely, melt the wax out of some candles and place the goods inside and pour wax back on top, or find another product which is inconspicuous and excellent for hiding things within. The coffee grounds add nothing but weight. With proper vacuum sealing and handling methods, there is no need for anything else to mask the scent. The dogs can smell in parts per million, so if the vacuum seal bursts, you aren't fooling anyone. I'd also be afraid of them training the dogs to smell for coffee beans, because it's so widely employed.

For some dumb fucking reason I've always had "alcohol bath" in my mind.
Bleach is undoubtedly better for breaking down organic molecules. I am concerned however that bleach evaporates slower than alcohol and tends to leave an odor that could be easily recognized and linked to smuggling.
Thanks for this; I won't forget it.

If you wipe with bleach, make sure to be vacuum sealing a day or two in advance in a place free from marijuana odor, so you can allow the bleach time to evaporate. Also, make sure each bag is fully dry before sealing another bag over it. Once, it wasn't entirely dry, and I didn't notice. Well the pressure of the second bag burst the first one, the bleach evaporated within the second sealed bag into the dry marijuana. I noticed the weed smelled a little funky, and it had became harsher. I had to chunk that stuff. There was even a little residual liquid bleach sandwiched between the two bags.
