I disagree, that's called "spirituality" by a lot of folks around here and it avoids the cultural trap of organized religion.
It can still be used as an excuse for ignorance, though.
to me some one can be spiritual without believing in god. i think the problem is when people believe enough to personify their spiritualist into an actual being.
then it is one step away from using it to justify your actions.

Probably is a bullshit study. But anything that reads "religion and extinct" in the same sentence is worthy of my time

I think the intellectual failure comes when people identify or define God too rigidly, too narrowly, and too personally. The point is that God is a transcendent being, not "somebody" you know. Now that all the intelligent people study at secular institutions, religion has lost touch with this basic ontology.

Not sure I agree with that. Its just a form of division of peoples. There are others sure. But religion is huge when it come to the upbringing and psyche of an individual.

It has been a huge aspect in managing coordination between individuals belonging to the same religion. Translating that to Europe and the US, it has been an essential coordination mechanism (and arguably, many of its constituents still are) facilitating processes of collaboration, trade and communication between Westerners. Granted, many of those constituents are what we consider essential human values, and indeed many of them are shared by several religions, but codification and education in the context of organized religion have helped greatly in making them effective. Note that I don't consider myself religious; I came to this realization concerning religion as a coordination mechanism in the context of my current research which is essentially also about managing coordination.
Apart from that, I think religion has served (and still does) the hordes of people who live in a world that is too complex to understand, and for some too full of grief and unhappiness to be bearable. To those, religion has held the promise that 'someone or something is tending the light at the end of the tunnel', as Thompson put it. It gives them peace of mind. Opium for the masses, indeed. Never underestimate the value of a good narcotic. I can't believe I have to tell you this.

I think differences in people go way beyond the realm of religion to say the least.

Presumably if some countries de-religionise themselves, then american christian missionaries will go back in and take back what they can, and as long as there are preachers there will be people who listen and choose to believe what they hear.

Mehh. The hope is these "preachers" will see there is nothing to preach when it comes to religion.
I guess they will have to invest their time in more productive activities

God is outmoded. Who needs a higher power when you can buy your health, safety, and comfort? Praying to your imaginary friend won't get you anywhere; a stack of $100 bills will. For better or worse, money is the new religion.
