http://www.portfolio.com/views/blogs/video/2011/03/22/reporter-smokes-salvia-for-the-ny-daily-news-and-nothing-happens
This video creates so many questions. First: What's going on at the New York Daily News?
Are they hiring college students right out of class and paying them to smoke (currently) legal drugs? After they get a hold of the drug, are they then required by the newspaper or by convention to smoke it while sitting cross-legged in the middle of the sidewalk? Is this what the kids are doing these days? I need to get out more.
For our apparent edification, Daily News "reporter" Irving DeJohn—I use quote marks because the unshaven, casually dressed young man defies any conventional sense of how a journalist appears and behaves—filmed this video. Maybe he'll go out and drink his first beer for us next.
In any case, DeJohn has a college student's dream job: go to the Lower East Side of New York City, purchase a drug, smoke it and film it while getting paid.
Ladies and gentlemen, the recession is officially over if people are being paid to do this.
What exactly is the point of this video? If it's a drug scare piece about salvia, it fails miserably as DeJohn first says he feels nothing initially, and then later says he feels like Fred Astaire. Take that, squares! This native Mexican plant will make you feel like a 1930s dancing matinee idol! If that's not wholesome, I don't know what is.
Salvia is legal in almost every state and is not currently regulated by federal drug laws.

That's right, the day has come when Miley Cyrus's decisions are affecting our legal system. Salvia—an herbal drug that, when smoked, can cause intense hallucinations—came into the American mainstream after a video of the pop-star smoking it appeared in December. A few weeks ago, a Roosevelt Island man jumped to his death after smoking it, which pushed Senator John Flanagan to introduce legislation banning the substance. Yesterday, the legislation passed the State Senate.
The senate notes in a statement that, "This is the same legal substance that pop star Miley Cyrus was allegedly smoking in a widely distributed video clip in December of last year." Flanagan said, “This legislation has passed the Senate four times in the past and it is important that the parents of New York know that their state is standing with them in the fight against drugs. It is time to protect our younger residents from this dangerous substance and impose a ban immediately in New York State before another tragedy occurs." The bill would fine anyone selling salvia in the state $500. However, according to one Daily News reporter, the high isn't even worth it.
Reporter Irving DeJohn decided to see what all the hype was about, and found the drug easily ($54 at Addiction NYC on St. Marks Place!). After a few "harsh" pulls he reportedly found himself giddy and giggling before coming down after ten minutes, an effect easily produced by a few beers at a quarter of the cost. Assemblyman Peter Rivera said he is pushing to have the bill voted on by the end of June, but that they are also considering a bill that would only ban salvia use by minors. Why not, it worked for cigarettes!

He got shit salvia or doesn't know how to smoke. If that is meant to assure people it's safe and not highly disassociative then it's even worse. What a pointless load of crap.

The next time he smokes a bowl his reality will tear in twain and he will have inter-cosmic sex with an alien!

I actually wrote Peter Rivera the other day. I hope my email gives him the final push to reject Flanagan's bill and go for something more logical such as taxation and regulation. Fuck yeah!
